Chinese supplier card disputes via marketplaces

An intermediary adds a payment relationship that your issuer needs to understand. Connect the statement merchant to the supplier order, distinguish a purchase payment from a wallet top-up, and preserve platform dispute records. Ask which remedy applies to your card and business purchase. Cambridge China Bridge can help document the supplier side.

Connect the statement merchant to the order

Start with the exact merchant description on your card statement. Compare it with the checkout receipt, platform order and supplier invoice. If the names differ, ask the platform to explain who accepted the card payment and how that transaction connects to the order. Treat the statement name as a starting point for tracing payment, rather than proof of who promised to supply the goods.

Save the checkout page and applicable terms. Ask whether the platform sold the goods, collected payment for the supplier, or credited a wallet. Record the contracting seller separately from the payment recipient. Our guide to paying Chinese suppliers covers payment staging; this guide concerns the evidence needed after a card payment.

Ask the issuer to assess the actual payment chain

Chargeback operates through card-scheme rules: the issuer sends a claim through the scheme to the merchant acquirer. Ask the issuer to identify the merchant attached to your transaction and assess the connection to the failed order. Supply receipts showing whether the card funded that purchase directly or added funds to an intermediary account.

For any statutory credit claim, ask the issuer to explain how the borrower, lender and supplier relationships affect its assessment. Do not assume that a platform name automatically removes protection or that using a credit card guarantees it. State whether the cardholder and contracting buyer are an individual or a company, identify the card product, and explain the business purpose.

Keep platform remedies and card enquiries moving

Platform protection depends on the order and its terms, as our guide to using Alibaba safely explains. Open the relevant platform dispute and save the submitted complaint, attachments, case reference and responses. Check the applicable terms for your goods, payment route and requested remedy rather than relying on a protection badge.

Contact the card issuer promptly while the platform case is open. Chargeback submission deadlines are set by scheme rules; ask which deadline and starting event apply to your transaction. Tell each party about the other case and any refund received. Before accepting a settlement or closing a case, ask what that action means for the remaining claim.

Build a file that connects payment and failure

Prepare a dated chronology supported by the card statement, payment receipt, order reference, seller identity, invoice and checkout terms. Include any wallet funding record and onward payment receipt. Show which payment funded which order, what was promised, when performance was expected, what happened and what remains unresolved.

For missing goods, include the agreed delivery commitment, tracking and supplier replies. For defective goods, compare inspection findings and photographs with the agreed specification and approved sample. Add refund requests, platform decisions and evidence of credits already received. Our guide to goods that arrive wrong covers the underlying supplier claim.

Get a reasoned answer from the issuer

Ask the issuer to confirm the route it considered, the disputed transaction, any missing documents and its reason if it declines to proceed. If it says an intermediary prevents a claim, ask which part of the payment or contractual relationship caused that conclusion. Respond with documents that address the stated gap rather than resending an unexplained chat history.

Keep the originals and provide a labelled index with relevant extracts. Ask what translations or further inspection evidence the issuer needs. Cambridge China Bridge has its own staff in China and can help assemble supplier communications and inspection findings; the issuer assesses the card dispute.

Frequently asked questions

Does a marketplace payment stop a card dispute?

Ask the issuer to assess the actual route. Show whether the card paid for the order or funded an intermediary account, and connect the statement merchant to the supplier documents.

Why is the platform name on my card statement?

Ask the platform who accepted the card payment and request a receipt linking it to your order. Keep the payment recipient and contracting seller separately identified.

Should I wait for the platform before calling my bank?

Contact the issuer promptly and disclose the open platform case. Ask about the applicable deadline, required evidence and how any platform refund affects the amount disputed.

What evidence should I send for faulty factory goods?

Send the agreed specification, approved sample record, inspection findings, photographs, payment-to-order trail and refund correspondence. Explain the specific mismatch and disclose any credit received.
