Are marketplace free gifts worth it?
A marketplace reward is worthwhile only if its usable value outweighs extra purchases, delivery charges and the time spent qualifying. Check whether it is withdrawable cash, shopping credit or a restricted coupon before paying. For business stock, compare the offer with a sourcing quote from Cambridge China Bridge.

Check what you must buy
Open the terms attached to the offer shown in your account. Check eligible products, required spending, whether delivery counts towards that spending, and whether discounted items qualify. Ask whether you must place separate orders or make further purchases to unlock the advertised reward.
Check what happens if an order is cancelled, returned or only partly delivered. Save the offer, terms and qualifying basket before payment. Use the marketplace listing evidence guide to organise that record. If the conditions remain unclear, leave the reward out of your buying decision.
Confirm the referral requirements
If invitations are required, check who counts as an eligible referral. Ask whether the person must be a new customer, register through your link, install the app, place an order or complete another action. Check any account, location or household restrictions in the offer.
Do not treat a shared invitation as a completed referral. Look for confirmation that the platform has accepted it and credited progress. Ask what remains to be done before inviting contacts or spending more. Include your staff time and the inconvenience to contacts when judging the reward.
Separate cash, credit and coupons
Read the redemption terms rather than relying on the headline reward amount. Confirm the reward type, where it can be used and whether withdrawal is available. A coupon bundle should be assessed coupon by coupon, against purchases your business actually intends to make.
Keep promotional rewards separate from refunds for purchased goods. If a dispute concerns a refund offered as account credit, use the marketplace credit and refunds guide. Do not assume a promotional credit has the same terms as a refund.
| Reward described | What to confirm | How to assess value |
|---|---|---|
| Cash | Withdrawal method, conditions and any fee | Count only the amount you can receive after charges |
| Shopping credit | Eligible purchases, expiry and transfer or withdrawal restrictions | Count only credit usable against planned purchases |
| Coupon | Minimum spending, excluded items and whether discounts combine | Count the actual saving on a suitable basket |
| Physical gift | Exact item, availability and delivery charges | Use what the item is worth to your business, rather than its advertised value |
Check deadlines and delivery charges
Record separate deadlines for joining, qualifying, claiming and using the reward. Confirm the time zone, whether you must claim manually and whether a daily action is needed. Ask whether qualifying orders must merely be placed or must also be paid, dispatched or delivered before the deadline.
The Competition and Markets Authority's guidance says businesses must be transparent when making urgency or price reduction claims online. Do not let a countdown replace checking the terms. Confirm delivery charges for both the qualifying purchases and the reward, including separate parcels. For a questionable advert, see the misleading shopping advert guide.

Compare the offer with buying normally
Build a basket containing only goods you would otherwise buy. Compare its delivered cost with a suitable alternative, then add spending required solely to qualify, reward delivery charges and staff time. Deduct only the reward value you can realistically use. Avoid buying unwanted stock to chase a headline saving.
For business stock, also compare the specification, supplier evidence and suitability for repeat orders. Ask Cambridge China Bridge for a comparable sourcing quote using the same product requirements and delivery destination. Its own staff in China can help check factory supply options; a shopping reward should not determine your supplier choice.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to buy something to get a free gift?
Check the specific offer for qualifying spending, eligible products and further orders. If you cannot establish the full purchase requirement before paying, do not count the gift as a saving.
How many friends must I invite for a reward?
Use the terms shown for your offer. Confirm which referrals count, what each person must do and whether accepted referrals have been credited. A shared link alone is not proof of qualification.
Can I withdraw a shopping reward as cash?
Check the reward's redemption terms. Look for an explicit withdrawal method and any conditions or fees. Value shopping credit and coupons only against suitable purchases you already plan to make.
Is delivery included with a free gift?
Confirm the gift's delivery charge separately from the qualifying order. Also check claim and redemption deadlines. Compare the full delivered cost before deciding whether the offer is worthwhile.
