Is an appliance extended warranty worth buying?
A paid extended warranty is worthwhile only if it adds useful cover and a workable repair route for your imported appliance. Confirm the provider, business-use eligibility, exclusions and costs you still bear, then compare it with existing cover and seller remedies. Factory support checks can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Identify who actually provides the cover
Ask for the full terms before paying. Record the company selling the plan, the company responsible for fulfilling it, the claims administrator and the repairer. These may be different organisations. Obtain their addresses, claim contacts and written confirmation that your China-bought model, purchase route, place of use and business activity are accepted.
Ask who authorises repairs, who pays the repairer and who handles complaints if the seller or administrator stops trading. A familiar shop name does not answer these questions. If buying through a UK sourcing seller, use agreeing warranty administration to clarify its role.
Distinguish insurance from a service contract
Do not classify the plan from its name. HMRC explains that a separate third-party warranty accepting risk for a separate premium will generally be insurance. Its service-contract guidance describes prepaid service supplied whether or not a breakdown occurs. Ask the provider to state which arrangement you are buying and identify the insurer if it is insurance.
For insurance, request the policy wording and claims and complaints procedures. For a service contract, request the service schedule and responsibility for breakdown work. Ask whether the provider's own insurance protects you directly or only reimburses the provider. Do not assume that an insurance-backed service plan gives you a personal insurance policy.
Test whether repairs are accessible
Give the proposed repairer the model details, serial plate photographs and installation location. Ask whether it accepts this imported version, can obtain compatible parts and technical instructions, and offers on-site work or collection. Confirm who pays for diagnosis, labour, parts, removal, reinstallation and transport, and what happens when parts cannot be obtained.
If repair means returning the appliance to China, ask who arranges packing, freight and customs clearance, and who bears costs outside the plan. Follow returning goods to China for warranty repair for that process. Compare the proposed turnaround and temporary replacement arrangements with the disruption your business can tolerate.
Read exclusions alongside the total cost
Ask for written answers on commercial use, direct imports, pre-existing faults, wear, consumables, accidental damage, cosmetic damage, installation faults and maintenance conditions. Check when cover starts, whether it overlaps the factory guarantee, and whether registration or prior repair approval is needed. Treat each as a question about this plan, rather than assuming every provider excludes it.
Compare the full plan cost and any excess with uncovered transport, diagnostic charges and replacement costs. Ask about claim limits, replacement specification, settlement deductions, renewal, cancellation and whether a successful claim ends cover. Check existing equipment insurance with your insurer. Consider setting aside repair funds if the plan offers little additional protection or no usable repair route.

Check existing remedies before buying
For a UK consumer purchase, statutory remedies may include a refund, repair or replacement for faulty goods whether or not extended cover was bought. A warranty expiring does not itself remove applicable repair or replacement rights. For business purchases, implied rights can be affected by legally reasonable contract terms. Review your purchase terms rather than assuming consumer remedies apply.
Identify the seller on your invoice and ask for its response to an existing fault before buying extra cover. For a direct overseas purchase, obtain advice on which remedies apply and how a claim could be pursued. Keep the invoice, original guarantee, fault evidence and correspondence. Use faulty goods and claims for the underlying supplier dispute.
Frequently asked questions
Will an extended warranty cover an appliance imported from China?
Ask for written acceptance of the exact model, direct-import purchase route, place of use and business activity. A general promise to cover appliances is insufficient.
Is an extended warranty always insurance?
Do not assume so. Ask whether you are buying an insurance policy or a service contract, who fulfils it, and whether any insurance protects you directly or only the provider.
Can I claim after the original warranty expires?
For a UK consumer purchase, applicable repair or replacement rights can continue after the warranty expires. Business buyers should check their purchase terms and available remedies.
When is paying for extended cover worthwhile?
When it covers a meaningful gap, accepts your imported appliance and business use, and provides accessible repairs at an acceptable total cost. Compare it with existing insurance, seller remedies and funding repairs yourself.
