Buying one sofa from China: total UK cost

It can be cheaper, but a low listing price does not prove a saving. Compare the exact sofa with a UK alternative using the full cost of packing, inspection, shipping, tax, delivery into your room and assembly. Keep VAT in your personal-purchase total. Ask for a written comparison from Cambridge China Bridge.

Compare the sofa you actually want

Start with a genuine branded, factory own-brand or unbranded sofa. Record the model, overall dimensions, upholstery, filling, frame, seat firmness, colour and removable parts. Similar photographs do not establish that the sofas are equivalent. Ask whether the factory will supply the sofa for a personal purchase before paying for checks or delivery planning.

Get a UK alternative priced with tax, delivery and assembly included where needed. Compare materials and the support offered if something arrives damaged. Our furniture sourcing guide covers material, packaging and safety checks; this comparison focuses on what you pay to have the sofa ready to use at home.

Get freight priced from the packed sofa

Ask for the length, width and height of every finished package, the total packed volume and gross weight. Include any pallet or crate. Use those details to obtain a shipping quote: the sofa's dimensions in your room are not its shipping dimensions. Ask whether removable legs or separate sections change the packing and assembly costs.

Request the full transport breakdown, including collection in China, freight, insurance, arrival handling, customs clearance and onward delivery. Ask about minimum charges and what could trigger storage or extra handling fees. Our small-orders service is the place to discuss whether the factory and shipping arrangement suit this purchase.

Build a personal-purchase total

Keep VAT in your total: VAT on something bought solely for personal use cannot be reclaimed as business VAT. Import VAT starts from the customs value used for duty, rather than the listing price alone. Ask the customs provider to show the duty calculation and the complete VAT calculation. VAT may be paid when buying or to the delivery company before receiving the goods.

Use the checklist below and mark each cost as included, separately quoted or unresolved. Count an included cost only once. Our landed-price guide explains the broader cost method, but its business example should not be used to remove VAT from your home purchase.

Costs to confirm before comparing with a UK sofa
CostWhat to confirm
Sofa and paymentExact specification, packing, currency conversion and payment charges
Checks before shipmentInspection scope, material evidence and any separately agreed specialist checks
Shipping and arrivalCollection, freight, insurance, handling and customs clearance
TaxApplicable duty and VAT, with who pays each clearly stated
Home deliveryPostcode, unloading, carrying, stairs and delivery into the agreed room
Ready to useAssembly, packaging removal and any access equipment

Agree delivery into your home

Do not treat 'home delivery' as confirmation that the sofa will reach your room. Send the delivery provider your postcode, floor, lift details, parking restrictions and measurements of doorways, stairs and tight turns. Ask who unloads, who carries it inside and whether the quoted service includes assembly and packaging removal.

Get carrying, stair access, assembly and any specialist lifting priced before committing. Ask what happens if the packed sofa cannot fit through the access route, including failed-delivery and storage charges. Use our sofa home-delivery guide for access planning and UK customs and delivery service to agree the clearance and delivery scope.

Inspect, then decide whether the saving is enough

Arrange inspection of the actual sofa before shipment. Ask for photographs of the fabric, seams, underside, legs and packaging, measurements against your specification, and an assembly check where relevant. Ask for safety evidence matching the actual upholstery and filling. Inspection cannot tell you whether you will find the sofa comfortable, so resolve that uncertainty before buying.

Subtract the complete China purchase total from the equivalent UK delivered-and-assembled price. Keep unresolved charges visible and ask who handles damage, missing parts and repairs, including who pays transport. If the apparent saving depends on an unanswered cost or an untested assumption about comfort, the comparison is not ready for a buying decision.

Frequently asked questions

Is buying a sofa from China cheaper?

Sometimes. Compare the exact sofa with a UK alternative after packing, inspection, shipping, tax, carrying and assembly. A listing price alone cannot show the saving.

Can I reclaim VAT on a sofa for my home?

VAT on a sofa bought solely for personal use cannot be reclaimed as business VAT. Keep it in the total you compare with the UK purchase.

What size do I need for a sofa shipping quote?

Ask for every package's finished dimensions, total packed volume and gross weight, including any pallet or crate. Room dimensions alone are insufficient.

Does delivery include carrying and assembly?

Ask for written confirmation. Agree unloading, carrying into your chosen room, stairs, assembly and packaging removal, with any extra charges priced before ordering.
