Partial returns: refunds on discounted China orders
Start with the amount paid for the returned goods after allocating discounts and vouchers. Ask for a separate explanation of any repricing of items you keep, and reconcile delivery, tax and earlier refunds. Check marketplace terms separately from applicable UK rights. Save the checkout record before requesting a return
Save the order confirmation, payment record, promotion terms and proposed refund screen. Record each item’s price, quantity, seller discount, marketplace voucher and allocated payment. Separate a promotional voucher from a gift card or wallet balance funded with your own money. Ask whether the checkout combines separate seller orders or a single bundle.
State which goods you are returning and why: a fault, a description mismatch or a change of mind. Keep photographs and seller messages with the calculation. Our guide to using Alibaba and business platforms safely covers wider order checks; this guide focuses on reconciling a discounted partial return.
Allocate discounts before estimating the refund
Use the checkout’s item-level discount allocation where available. If it shows only an order total, ask which goods qualified for each promotion and how the saving was distributed. For your comparison worksheet, a possible method is to allocate a shared discount in proportion to the qualifying goods’ prices before that discount. Label this as your estimate, pending confirmation of the actual method.
Apply item-specific discounts to the relevant goods before allocating shared savings, unless the checkout records a different sequence. Keep seller discounts and marketplace vouchers separate, especially where their eligible goods differ. Ask whether a promotional voucher will be restored, whether it expires and whether a return changes eligibility. Do not count a restored promotional voucher as a cash refund.
Check any repricing of the goods you keep
If the proposed refund falls because your retained goods no longer meet a bundle or spending condition, request the promotion term shown when you ordered. Ask for the original discounted value of the returned goods, the proposed increase in retained-item prices and every other adjustment separately. Compare the quoted term with the actual return reason; do not approve an unexplained total.
Check for duplicate deductions: a voucher already allocated across the goods should not also disappear from your worksheet without an explanation. Reconcile the original payment with the proposed refund, earlier refunds and the amount attributed to retained goods and separate charges. A platform calculation and a screenshot of its terms are evidence to review, not a legal conclusion.
Separate marketplace policy from applicable UK rights
Identify the contracting seller and ask whether UK consumer rules apply to this purchase. For resale stock or other business purchases, review the UK seller’s business supply terms with an adviser rather than assuming consumer cancellation rules apply. UK government guidance confirms that business customers have implied rights unless the contract lawfully states otherwise in a way a court would consider reasonable.
Where UK consumer rights apply, sale goods carry the same refund rights as goods bought at full price. That does not turn a discounted purchase into a refund at its undiscounted price. Unfair consumer terms cannot be enforced. Ask an adviser to assess disputed bundle repricing, particularly for faulty goods, and whether the goods form a single set before treating an individual component as independently returnable.

Request a breakdown and check the settlement
Send the seller or platform a written request: “Please show the amount paid for the returned goods, each allocated discount, any retained-item repricing and its checkout term, delivery adjustments, tax adjustments, earlier refunds and the final refund method.” Ask for the return address and tracking arrangements before dispatch. Save the reply and parcel evidence, then compare the settled refund with the agreed breakdown.
Keep merchandise refunds, outward delivery, return postage and VAT entries separate. For the tax follow-up, use our guide to VAT adjustments on overseas goods returns. Cambridge China Bridge’s own staff in China can help gather seller messages and order records for reconciliation.
Frequently asked questions
Will I get the full item price back after a discount?
Start with the amount allocated to that item after discounts, rather than its advertised full price. Ask for the checkout allocation and a separate explanation of every proposed adjustment.
Can returning an item remove my bundle discount?
Ask for the original promotion term and a calculation showing the increase proposed for retained goods. Check it separately from your return reason and applicable UK rights before accepting the refund.
Do I get my marketplace voucher back?
Ask whether the promotional voucher is restored, remains usable or expires. Keep this separate from the cash refund and from any gift card or wallet balance bought with your own money.
Do UK consumer return rules cover business stock?
Do not assume they apply. Check the seller, purchase purpose and supply terms with an adviser. Business customers can have implied rights, subject to lawful contract terms a court would consider reasonable.
