HMRC customs clearance times for China imports

HMRC publishes conditional National Clearance Hub timings for arrived goods after supporting documents are requested: air and road imports should clear within 2 hours; sea imports follow document-receipt cut-offs. These are not examination or delivery deadlines. Use this distinction when planning orders with Cambridge China Bridge.

Which part of clearance does this cover?

The National Clearance Hub processes declarations selected for further checks. Its published timings concern arrived goods after a message requesting supporting documents, rather than every shipment from China. For the wider process, read UK customs clearance.

What timings does HMRC publish?

Read the conditions alongside the timings. The air and road wording says goods “should” be cleared; the marine wording ties clearance to when HMRC receives documents. Do not start a delivery countdown when the factory dispatches the goods or the broker prepares the declaration.

National Clearance Hub published timings for arrived goods following a document request
Import movementPublished timing
Air, road and short-strait roll-on roll-off importsWithin 2 hours
Marine imports: documents received between 8am and 3pmWithin 3 hours
Marine imports: documents received after 3pmBy 8am the following day

What about examinations and queries?

The timing section gives no separate completion deadline for a physical examination, sampling or laboratory results. Treat those stages as unresolved until the broker confirms their status. HMRC sends queries to the secure inbox; ask who monitors it and who will obtain any missing factory information.

Does customs clearance mean ready to collect?

Keep customs clearance, commercial release and delivery separate in your shipment plan. Ask the forwarder to confirm carrier release, transport-document arrangements, outstanding charges, terminal availability and the collection booking. Then obtain a delivery appointment. A customs clearance message alone does not establish that these arrangements are complete.

What should you ask your broker?

Ask for the declaration reference, arrival status, document request, submission acknowledgement, outstanding query or examination, and clearance message. Use the customs document checklist to prepare the supporting pack. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can help obtain factory paperwork; ask the broker to identify the current blocker and the forwarder to confirm the next collection step.

Frequently asked questions

Does HMRC guarantee China imports clear within 2 hours?

No blanket guarantee is published. The wording concerns arrived air, road and short-strait imports after a request for supporting documents. Marine imports have different cut-offs.

When does the sea-freight clearance timing start?

The published marine timings depend on HMRC receiving documents: between 8am and 3pm, clearance is within 3 hours; after 3pm, by 8am the following day. They are not measured from factory dispatch.

How long does a customs examination take?

This National Clearance Hub timing section gives no separate examination deadline. Ask the broker whether examination, sampling or results remain outstanding before promising a delivery date.

Why is my container still waiting after customs clearance?

Ask the forwarder to check carrier release, transport documents, charges, terminal availability and collection arrangements. Confirm which stage is pending rather than relying on the word “cleared”.
