Can I use ground screws from China for a garden room?
Yes, if a structural engineer accepts the exact screws, connections and installation method for your building and ground conditions. Make site assessment, corrosion evidence and installation verification buying checkpoints before loading the foundations. Factory documents can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Assess the ground before selecting screws
Give your structural engineer the building drawings, intended use, site photographs and proposed foundation positions. Ask what ground investigation is needed to assess soil layers, made ground, groundwater, drainage, nearby trees and slopes. Have the engineer decide whether ground screws are suitable and specify their layout and installation criteria before you order.
Do not choose screw length or quantity from the building footprint alone. Ask how variable ground, buried obstructions and nearby foundations will be addressed. Keep the permissions review alongside this technical work using our garden building permissions guide.
Locate buried services before disturbing ground
HSE says underground cables must be located, identified and clearly marked before work begins. Ask the installer to arrange a buried-services assessment covering the proposed screw positions and equipment access. Include private garden supplies, drains and services added after the original building work.
Do not treat a plan or an apparently clear scan as confirmation that a screw position is safe. Ask the competent person carrying out the assessment to explain detection limitations and specify any further investigation and safe working method. Stop if an unidentified obstruction or service is encountered; have any relocation reviewed before continuing.
Obtain approval for loads and connections
Ask the engineer to approve compression, uplift and lateral resistance, settlement assumptions and the load path from the building into the ground. Provide building weight, intended contents and the information needed to assess wind and other relevant loads. A supplier's headline load rating is insufficient without the test conditions, soil assumptions and exact product details.
Obtain approved drawings for screw heads, brackets, bolts, welds, bracing and the connection to the building frame. Identify screw dimensions, steel grade and drawing revisions in the order. Ask the engineer to define acceptable installation limits, required site tests and who may approve deviations. Agree how the installer will obtain answers before substituting parts or moving screws.
Check corrosion evidence against the site
Request the steel specification, coating process, coating thickness measurements, inspection method and batch references. Ask the engineer to assess the corrosion protection against the soil conditions, groundwater, exposure and intended service life. Include welds, hollow sections, screw heads and contact with other metals in that review.
A coating photograph or salt-spray report alone does not establish buried service life. Ask what evidence supports the proposed durability and how installation damage will be assessed and repaired. Use our material certificate checks and test report verification guide to connect the documents to the ordered screws.
Keep an installation record for every screw
Agree the record format before installation. Record each screw's position, product and batch reference, installed depth, final head level and alignment, installer, date and equipment used. Capture installation torque where specified, together with equipment calibration records and the observations needed by the engineer.
Record refusal, obstructions, unexpected ground, damaged coatings, extensions and changed positions as separate findings. Photograph heads and connections before they are concealed. Do not convert installation torque into bearing capacity using a generic chart; ask the engineer what relationship, supporting evidence and acceptance criteria apply to this system and site.

Verify acceptance before loading
Agree a written hold point before the building or stored materials load the screws. Have the engineer define the verification needed, including any trial installation or load testing, the test method and acceptance criteria. Arrange tests at the appropriate installation stage and keep results linked to the tested positions and equipment records.
Obtain written acceptance of the installation records, test results and resolved deviations before releasing the hold point. Check that the completed heads, connections and layout match the approved design. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can coordinate factory drawings and batch evidence; retain a named engineer responsible for site suitability and acceptance.
Frequently asked questions
Are Chinese ground screws suitable for a garden room?
They may be suitable if your engineer accepts the exact product, ground conditions, loads and connections. Obtain that assessment before ordering and verify the installation before loading.
Can I rely on the factory's ground screw load rating?
Ask for the test method, soil conditions, product dimensions and failure criteria behind the rating. Your engineer should decide whether that evidence supports the proposed building and site.
Does galvanising prove ground screws will last?
No. Request coating and batch evidence, then ask the engineer to assess durability for the actual soil, exposure and intended service life, including installation damage.
What should I check before building on ground screws?
Obtain written acceptance of the installed layout, depths, levels, connections, required test results and resolved deviations. Keep the installation records linked to the approved design.
