Getting started

Can I use China-bought gabions in my garden?

Yes, if a UK engineer confirms that the chosen system suits your site and retained soil. Settle drainage, nearby loads, boundaries and permission checks before fixing the specification or ordering. Your engineer should release the design before factory production is coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Start with the ground, not the factory catalogue

Appoint a UK structural engineer with retaining-wall experience, bringing in geotechnical advice where needed. Provide a measured site plan and sections showing existing and proposed ground levels, slopes, buildings, boundaries, trees and buried services. Identify whether the proposal holds back soil or simply forms a decorative enclosure.

Ask the engineer what investigation is needed to establish the founding ground, existing fill, groundwater and neighbouring foundations. Photographs and supplier drawings cannot establish soil strength or settlement behaviour. Record unresolved assumptions and agree which findings could change the wall position, foundation or choice of system.

Define the retained soil and nearby loads

Show the engineer the full height of soil being retained and the slope behind it, rather than only the visible wall face. Describe existing soil, proposed backfill and any terracing. Ask for checks covering sliding, overturning, bearing, settlement and stability of the surrounding slope, including how water affects the design.

Mark driveways, parked vehicles, buildings, sheds, pools and stockpiles near the wall. Include machinery and temporary material storage during construction. Ask the engineer to define the loads and any restrictions on their position. A supplier’s suggested wall height is useful only when its ground, loading and drainage assumptions match your project.

Design drainage as part of the wall

Ask for a drainage drawing showing suitable backfill, filters, drainage layers or pipes, collection points and the proposed outlet. Have the engineer explain how the system controls water pressure and prevents soil washing into voids. A gabion’s open stone face does not establish that the retained ground will drain adequately.

Trace where water will actually go, including runoff from higher ground and neighbouring surfaces. Ask the project adviser to check the outlet arrangement and any necessary permissions or connection agreements. Include maintenance access and a response to blockage. Do not leave the installer to choose the outlet after the materials arrive.

Resolve boundaries and permission questions

Confirm the proposed footprint with your property adviser, including foundations, drainage and any reinforcement extending behind the blocks. Discuss access for excavation and installation with affected neighbours. In England and Wales, ask a party wall adviser whether boundary work or excavation near neighbouring foundations triggers the party wall process. Our party wall checks guide covers that procedure.

Ask the local planning authority whether the exact proposal needs planning permission, supplying existing and proposed levels, elevations and its relationship to roads and boundaries. Ask building control to confirm the position for this wall and associated works. Party wall agreements are separate from planning permission and building regulations approval. For Scotland or Northern Ireland, obtain advice for the site’s jurisdiction.

Turn the design into a material specification

For gabions, have the engineer specify basket geometry, mesh, wire, corrosion protection, diaphragms, connectors, bracing and stone fill. Confirm how the baskets are assembled and joined. For blocks, specify the exact retaining system, unit properties, connections, foundation, backfill and any reinforcement. Agree the space needed behind the wall before choosing a system.

Request evidence for the exact components and arrangement proposed, and send it to the engineer for review. Keep product performance and documentation checks alongside the site design using our construction materials guide. Our gabion sourcing guide supports the basket purchase; the site assessment establishes what to buy.

Release the order against reviewed drawings

Obtain the engineer’s reviewed calculations, drawings, material schedule and installation requirements before authorising production. Agree who checks excavation, founding ground, drainage and assembly on site, and when those checks happen. Include temporary support and construction sequence. If exposed ground differs from the assumptions, pause the affected work and return it to the engineer.

Use our product specification guide to attach matching drawing revisions and acceptance criteria to the order. Require approval before substitutions, and agree unloading, storage and handling arrangements. Cambridge China Bridge’s own staff in China can coordinate factory information and inspections against that brief; keep site design and installation review with your UK project team.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an engineer for a garden retaining wall?

For this purchase, appoint a UK engineer with retaining-wall experience before selecting materials. Ask them to assess the ground, retained soil, water and nearby loads, and define the investigations and design needed.

Do gabions need drainage behind them?

Ask your engineer to design the drainage and filters for the retained soil. An open stone face alone does not establish adequate drainage. Confirm the outlet and maintenance access before ordering.

Do garden retaining walls need planning permission?

Ask your local planning authority about the exact site and design. Provide existing and proposed levels, elevations and boundary details. Check building control and neighbour issues separately before production.

Can I order using a Chinese supplier’s wall drawing?

Use it as input for your UK engineer’s review. Confirm its soil, water and loading assumptions against the site, then order against the reviewed design and exact material specification.
