Getting started

Choosing a First China Product: UK Compliance Costs

Choose a product with a clear intended use, identifiable safety rules and evidence gaps you can afford to close. Before buying samples, obtain a written scope and quote, including corrective work, and reject candidates with missing specifications or an unaffordable evidence plan. Ask Cambridge China Bridge to coordinate factory information.

Define the use before comparing products

Write a candidate brief covering the user, intended activity, materials, construction, power supply, accessories and proposed advertising claims. Flag children's play, food contact, skin contact and protective functions for the assessor. Attach photographs and available factory documents. A catalogue description such as “household accessory” leaves too much unresolved to price the compliance work.

Name the sales territory explicitly. This comparison concerns Great Britain; confirm the applicable rules for Northern Ireland with the relevant authority. Ask for a separate assessment if your launch includes it. For products intended or reasonably foreseeably likely to be used by consumers, general product safety rules provide a starting point. Products covered by those rules must be safe when placed on the market.

Compare the work created by each intended use

Use the table to brief a product compliance specialist, rather than to declare a category compliant. Toy rules set essential safety requirements before market placement; the toy definition concerns products designed or intended for children's play. Electrical equipment safety rules cover domestic equipment as well as workplace equipment. Ask the specialist to confirm the scope and identify any additional applicable rules.

For a connectable consumer product, ask the relevant authority to confirm whether the security regime applies and whether a statement of compliance is required alongside other applicable requirements. Read our connectable-product guide before shortlisting it. An unpowered organiser may be a useful candidate to investigate, but its materials, edges and likely use still need assessment. Simpler construction is a sourcing preference, not proof of safety.

Price evidence gaps, not certificate promises

Ask the assessor to record the applicable rules, proposed assessment route, relevant standards and why each applies. Request a document review identifying what can be used and what remains missing. Match existing evidence to the intended use, model, materials and components using our test-report verification guide. Follow the marking and certification guide to distinguish a marking, a management certificate and product evidence.

Obtain a written quote for the missing work, specimen requirements, dispatch, document preparation and review. Ask what a failure, design change or replacement component would add. Keep an allowance for corrective work and retesting. Our small-range testing budget guide covers variant planning; here, compare the complete evidence plan for each candidate before choosing which product to sample.

Set rejection conditions before sample spending

Reject or hold a candidate if its intended use remains disputed, its materials or components are unidentified, reports describe a different configuration, or the supplier refuses verification. Also stop if the assessor cannot define the missing work or the factory will not discuss changes needed to address safety concerns. A good-looking sample cannot settle those questions.

Compare the quoted evidence work and a corrective-work allowance with the cash available after freight, stock and selling costs. Treat an unquoted task as unresolved, not free. If the plan only fits by assuming every test passes or every factory report is usable, choose another candidate. Check commercial viability separately through our product import viability guide.

Approve a bounded sample brief

Record each candidate as proceed, hold or reject, with the reason and unresolved questions. Proceed to sampling only when you can explain what the sample will establish, who will assess it and how you will fund the planned evidence work. This is a buying decision, not confirmation that the product is ready for sale.

Send Cambridge China Bridge the selected specification, intended use, territory, existing documents, assessor's scope and spending limit. Its own staff in China can coordinate factory information and sample identification. Keep approval of the product and subsequent changes with you, and return substitutions or new features to the assessor before committing further money.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest first product to import from China?

Shortlist products with a clear use, fixed materials and components, and evidence gaps you can afford to close. An unpowered organiser is worth investigating, but its category alone does not establish safety.

Should I order samples before checking UK compliance?

Start with the specification and available documents. Obtain an assessment scope and cost plan first, then order identified samples for the checks that plan calls for.

Does a CE mark mean I can skip testing costs?

A marking alone does not resolve evidence gaps. Ask an assessor to review the exact configuration and supporting documents, then quote any additional assessment or testing.

When should I reject a product before ordering samples?

Reject or hold it when the use or construction is unclear, evidence cannot be verified, the factory refuses needed changes, or the complete assessment and corrective-work plan exceeds your available cash.
