Safety testing costs for a small product range
Sometimes, but only where a competent assessor documents why the tested samples cover the proposed variants. Before committing to colours, sizes or models, request a coverage plan and itemised costs for a narrow launch and optional additions. Factory inspection does not replace safety evidence. Ask Cambridge China Bridge to coordinate factory details and samples.

Send a launch shortlist before ordering
For a Great Britain launch, compliance with applicable product safety regulations must be demonstrated before selling. Ask a laboratory or product compliance specialist competent in your product to identify the evidence needed. Give them the intended use, sales destination, construction, materials and proposed variants. Separate the essential launch range from colours, sizes and models you could defer.
Request a written variant coverage and testing plan before approving the range. It should identify evidence that can be used, gaps, representative samples and reasons for each coverage decision. Our colour and size coverage guide explains the technical assessment. Here, use that assessment to decide which range your available cash can support.
Ask for priced options, not a blanket report promise
Ask the assessor to quote the proposed launch range and show what each optional addition changes. Request separate costs for document review, coverage assessment, tests, specimens, dispatch and report amendments. Ask which charges are shared across the range and which arise from a particular variant. A promise that everything goes on the same report does not explain the testing scope.
Use the options below as a quotation brief. Compare quotations against the same specification and deliverables. If using factory reports, follow our report verification guide before treating them as a possible saving.
| Option | Written answer needed | Budget decision |
|---|---|---|
| Essential launch range | Evidence, tests and specimens needed for the named variants | Can the remaining cash support saleable stock? |
| Additional colour or finish | Coverage reasoning and any extra assessment, specimens or tests | Include now or defer until demand is clearer |
| Additional size or model | Which evidence remains usable and which gaps need work | Compare the added cost with the narrower launch |
| Later range extension | Records to retain and review needed before adding variants | Budget the extension separately |
Budget for specimens and corrective work
Get the laboratory's specimen schedule before confirming the factory order. Ask which samples will be consumed or damaged, whether specimens can be reused and what would be needed after a failure. Include sample manufacture and dispatch in the budget. Keep laboratory specimens separate from saleable stock so the testing plan does not leave you short of goods to sell.
Reserve cash for corrective work, replacement specimens and retesting rather than spending the full balance on stock. Ask what the quoted work excludes and what would trigger another charge. For laboratory location and arrangements, see testing in China or the UK. If the complete plan is unaffordable, remove optional variants and request a revised scope.
Keep safety evidence separate from routine inspection
Keep separate budget lines for the assessor's safety evidence plan and routine factory or batch checks. Inspection can check quantities, appearance, packing and conformity to the agreed specification. It does not replace the assessment and testing needed to resolve safety evidence gaps. Ask what each quoted check delivers and who will review the results.
For our testing and certification service, factory audits and inspections are usually included in the quote; complex checks that need a third party are charged separately and agreed in advance. Ask the quote to identify laboratory work explicitly. For the additional planning involved in toys, see small first orders of own-brand toys.
Approve the range and control later additions
Approve the launch list alongside the written coverage plan, testing quote and specimen schedule. Put variants with unresolved evidence on hold. Keep the assessed materials, components and construction linked to the order. Agree that proposed substitutions or additions go back to the assessor before you authorise them, with any extra cost confirmed first.
Through our own-brand sourcing service, Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can coordinate factory variant information and sample identification. Send your proposed range, existing reports and available launch budget. Ask for coordination around the assessor's written plan so your stock commitment follows the evidence and costs.
Frequently asked questions
Can a safety test report cover all my colours and sizes?
Sometimes. Ask a competent assessor for written coverage decisions tied to the actual differences. Shared model names or similar appearance do not establish coverage.
Will fewer colours make safety testing cheaper?
Possibly, if removing colours removes assessment or testing work. Ask for revised scope and costs; do not assume every colour adds a separate test charge.
What should a small-range testing quote include?
Ask for coverage assessment, tests, specimen requirements, sample manufacture, dispatch and report deliverables. Clarify exclusions and charges for corrective work or retesting.
Can factory inspection replace safety testing?
Routine inspection does not resolve missing safety evidence. Keep its scope separate from the assessor's plan and confirm which checks, assessments and tests your product needs.
