Should I test products in China or the UK?

Use a laboratory in China when its scope and reports meet your needs and keeping samples near the factory makes corrections easier. Choose a UK laboratory when your customer requests it or local access matters. Confirm acceptance before booking. Discuss sample collection and testing arrangements with Cambridge China Bridge.

Start with who will accept the report

Ask your customer, retailer or other report recipient to confirm the proposed laboratory, test methods, product variants and report format in writing before you pay. Ask whether they require a named laboratory or will assess another laboratory's credentials. Treat silence as an unresolved question.

A laboratory in China may suit development work close to the factory. A UK laboratory may suit a customer who wants local discussions or access to samples. If you propose development testing in China followed by final testing in the UK, agree what each stage will establish and whether work would be duplicated.

Check the scope at the actual testing site

Accreditation is the government's recommended means of demonstrating an organisation's competence. For either country, request the current accreditation schedule and match the proposed tests to the listed scope. Ask the laboratory to identify the test method, edition, product or material covered, and the site that will perform the work.

Ask which results will be reported as accredited and whether any work will be subcontracted. A laboratory group's name or a logo on a quotation should prompt checks of the actual testing site. Use checking laboratory accreditation for the UK checks, and checking report coverage to match evidence to your order.

Compare sample transport and usable turnaround

Request quotations against the same testing brief and sample description. Compare collection, packing, carriage, laboratory intake, conditioning, testing, review and report issue. Ask when the laboratory can accept the sample and what starts its quoted turnaround. A testing estimate alone does not tell you when you will have a usable report.

For China testing, establish who collects and delivers the production sample. For UK testing, confirm carrier acceptance, transport paperwork and laboratory receiving instructions before dispatch. In either case, label and photograph the sample and record who handled it. See sending inspection samples to a UK laboratory for the dispatch workflow.

Agree the failure and retesting route

Before booking, ask whether testing consumes or damages the sample, whether spare samples are needed, and how long retained samples remain available. Request separate terms for investigating a failure, testing a corrected sample and issuing a revised report. Include replacement sample transport when comparing the options.

A nearby China laboratory may make factory investigation easier; a UK laboratory may make buyer discussions easier. Ask the laboratory to explain which tests it recommends repeating after a correction and why. Record the changed materials, components or construction. The bulk production and approved sample guide covers keeping those changes under control.

Secure original reports before placing the booking

Agree who commissions the work, who is named on the report and who receives the laboratory-issued original. Ask for the complete report, including sample identification, photographs, methods, results, limitations and attachments. Confirm the report language and your ability to share it with customers before testing starts.

If the factory or an intermediary books the tests, arrange your access and permission to verify the report directly with the laboratory. Keep a downloaded copy outside their portal and retain the failed report alongside any replacement. Send Cambridge China Bridge your testing brief and customer acceptance conditions so its staff in China can coordinate sample collection and factory corrections.

Frequently asked questions

Will my UK customer accept a Chinese lab report?

Ask the customer to approve the proposed laboratory, scope, methods and report format before booking. Do not assume acceptance from the laboratory's name or location.

Is product testing quicker in China?

Compare the route from sample collection to report issue. Local delivery may help, but intake queues, conditioning, review and replacement samples can change the outcome.

Should I repeat a Chinese test in the UK?

Identify the reason first: customer acceptance, a changed product, missing coverage or a disputed result. Ask the proposed laboratory what existing evidence it can use before commissioning repeat work.

Can I get the original report if the factory books testing?

Agree access before booking. Ask the laboratory what permission it needs to send you the complete report and verify it directly. Keep your own copy rather than relying on the factory's portal.
