Does furniture fire testing cover my materials?
Match the ordered cover, interliner and filling specifications to the specimens and scope in the full reports. Ask the laboratory to map the applicable requirements and explain any differences before approving production. Factory material checks in China can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Establish which requirements apply
The official amendment guidance concerns domestic upholstered furniture placed on the UK market. Start by recording the product type, intended use and destination. Check its scope exclusions before asking a laboratory to identify the applicable filling, cover and upholstery tests. Do not assume a sofa, mattress and scatter cushion need the same evidence.
The amendment guidance removes display-label requirements while retaining permanent-label obligations. A label is therefore a separate check from whether reports cover the ordered materials. Our furniture sourcing guide covers the wider sourcing and freight decisions; this guide focuses on matching evidence to your order.
Freeze the ordered layer specification
Create a signed material schedule for each upholstery construction, including seat, back, arms and removable cushions where they differ. Record the cover supplier and fabric code, colour, fibre composition, backing and treatment; the interliner supplier, grade and placement; and every filling layer, including foam grade, density, thickness and arrangement.
Attach a cross-section drawing, photographs and labelled material samples. Use these identifiers in the purchase order and report comparison, rather than descriptions such as ‘fire-resistant fabric’. If there is no interliner, record that explicitly. Keep each alternative cover or filling configuration separately identifiable.
Build an evidence map
Request complete reports, including specimen descriptions, photographs, preparation details, results and limitations. Ask the laboratory to map each applicable requirement to a report and explain whether it concerns a component, a prescribed test assembly or the ordered upholstery combination. If a report names a standard test substrate, ask what that result establishes for your order.
Use the comparison below as a purchasing control, not as a substitute for the laboratory’s interpretation. Follow our test-report verification guide to check the issuer and document authenticity.
| Ordered element | What to match | What to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Cover | Fabric code, composition, colour, backing and treatment | Different fabric identity or an unexplained variant |
| Interliner | Material grade, specification and placement | Missing identity or an unexplained reliance on a barrier |
| Fillings | Each material, grade and specified properties | Missing layers or a different foam specification |
| Upholstery assembly | Layer sequence and specimen construction | A component result presented as evidence for the whole combination |
Resolve differences before approval
Send the laboratory your ordered specification and a marked comparison showing every mismatch. Ask for a written explanation of what the existing reports cover, what remains unsupported and what additional testing it recommends. If the supplier relies on an interliner to justify its cover choice, ask the laboratory to identify the applicable route and confirm its conditions against your specification.
For example, matching fabric and foam names do not resolve a report that omits your intervening wadding. Hold approval until the laboratory explains the gap or suitable evidence is obtained. Do not treat a supplier’s statement that materials are ‘equivalent’ as the explanation.

Keep production tied to the evidence
Approve an evidence pack containing the material schedule, complete reports, laboratory explanations and retained samples. Ask the factory to link incoming material labels and production records to those approved identifiers. During inspection, compare accessible layers and material records with the pack; photographs alone cannot confirm fire performance.
Make substitutions subject to written approval and renewed evidence review, including changes to backing, treatment, interliner or filling arrangement. Our material substitution guide explains that approval process. Cambridge China Bridge can use its own staff in China to compare factory materials and records with the agreed specification.
Frequently asked questions
Does a fabric fire-test pass cover the whole sofa?
Do not assume so. Ask the laboratory which requirement the report addresses and what evidence supports the ordered fillings and upholstery assembly.
Can I use the same report for another fabric colour?
Ask the issuing laboratory whether that variant is covered. Provide its fabric code, backing and treatment details, and keep the written explanation with the order.
Does adding an interliner solve missing fire evidence?
Do not approve on that assumption. Ask the laboratory to check the proposed interliner, cover specification and applicable route, then identify any remaining evidence gaps.
What if the factory changes the foam after testing?
Hold approval for the changed configuration. Record the replacement specification and ask the laboratory whether existing evidence covers it or further testing is needed.
