Costs & payment

Do I get delivery refunded when I cancel?

For a covered whole-order cancellation, a UK seller must refund standard delivery paid for, but need only refund the standard amount if you chose premium delivery. If keeping some goods, ask for an agreed delivery calculation. Return carriage is a separate cost. Cambridge China Bridge can help you check the order breakdown.

Start with the cancellation right

This guide concerns changing your mind about a personal purchase from a UK seller. First use our personal-order cancellation guide to check whether your order qualifies, including any bespoke-goods exception. Buying stock for your business needs a different contract check.

Gather the order confirmation, delivery options shown before payment, invoice and cancellation notice. Identify the goods seller and separate any sourcing-service agreement. Mark clearly whether you are cancelling the whole goods order or asking to keep some items.

Separate standard delivery from the upgrade

For a covered whole-order cancellation, the seller must refund the standard delivery charge you paid. If you chose a more expensive delivery option, the required delivery refund can be limited to the standard amount. The premium difference need not be refunded.

Ask the seller to identify the standard option available when you ordered and show its charge separately from the upgrade. Keep a screenshot or saved quotation. If the seller offered only the delivery method you paid for, ask it to explain any proposed premium deduction rather than accepting the label alone.

Keeping items needs a separate calculation

If you want to keep some goods, ask the seller to confirm the partial cancellation and its delivery-refund calculation in writing. Do not budget for the whole-order delivery refund automatically. Ask whether the original charge covered the basket together or included separately priced delivery for particular items.

Request an explanation of any delivery amount retained, using the original delivery terms and the items you are keeping. Avoid dividing carriage equally between items without checking those terms. For discounted baskets, also read our partial-return refund guide.

Treat return carriage separately

Refunding the original standard delivery charge does not itself make the return journey free. For a change-of-mind return, the seller need not pay return delivery if it told you beforehand that this cost would fall to you. Ask it to show that information and confirm any promise to provide a paid return label.

Before booking collection, confirm the return address, packaging instructions and who pays the carrier. If you cannot find a prior return-cost notice, ask why the seller is charging you. For an overseas return, use our personal-purchase return guide before dispatch.

Ask for a refund breakdown you can check

Write: “Please confirm the goods being cancelled, the original standard delivery refund, any premium delivery amount retained, and the separate return-carriage arrangement. If I am keeping items, please explain the delivery calculation for that partial cancellation.” Attach the order confirmation and relevant delivery terms.

Compare the reply with the invoice and keep the cancellation, return receipt and refund record together. If goods are faulty or do not match the description, describe that issue separately: the existing personal-order cancellation guide explains why a fault complaint needs its own assessment.
