China solar panels: can I get SEG payments?
Buying directly from China can preserve a route to SEG payments if the installation meets the scheme's requirements. Confirm the exact panel model, installer certification, export meter and supplier evidence before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge can check factory documents and shipment specifications.

Assess the installation before buying the panels
SEG installations must be in Great Britain. Ask your prospective SEG supplier to confirm the certification requirements for your proposed solar installation and installer, including whether MCS or an equivalent scheme is needed. The practical conclusion is to assess your proposed installation against those requirements before assuming that buying directly from China will either prevent or guarantee payments.
Our solar panel sourcing guide covers import compliance, panel testing and shipment checks. This guide adds the acceptance checks between choosing the equipment and applying for export payments. Ask your intended installer and prospective SEG supplier to review the proposed system before you commit.
Separate product documents from installation evidence
Ask the installer to check the exact manufacturer's name, panel model, variant and certification listing. Send the datasheet and certificate details, then ask whether they will use those buyer-supplied panels within their certification route. A certificate for a similar model is not a useful basis for placing the order.
CE or UKCA documentation does not establish that your completed installation meets the SEG certification requirements. Keep product conformity documents and installation certification evidence separately. Our certification guide explains the product documents; obtain the installer's written confirmation of the scheme evidence they will provide after commissioning.
Agree who will install and document the system
Before paying a deposit, ask the installer to confirm their current certification, whether they accept customer-supplied equipment and who will issue the installation certificate. Agree responsibility for design, installation, commissioning and the handover documents. Do not budget on finding someone to certify finished work later.
Send the inverter model and proposed system configuration alongside the panel details. Ask who will handle the network operator paperwork and retain the resulting correspondence. Our renewable equipment guide explains why equipment documentation and connection acceptance need checking together.
Confirm export metering and the export identifier
SEG requires a meter capable of providing half-hourly export readings and an export Meter Point Administration Number, known as an MPAN. Ask the prospective supplier to confirm whether your existing meter can serve the proposed installation and what work is needed to establish the export metering arrangement.
Ask how the supplier will receive readings, how you should identify the export register and who will arrange the export MPAN. Send meter photographs and identifying details if requested. Treat inverter monitoring and generation figures as supporting information, and ask the supplier to confirm the actual meter readings it will accept.
Get the supplier's evidence checklist before ordering
Request a written checklist for your proposed installation size and certification route. Ask which installation certificate or equivalent evidence, commissioning records, network correspondence, meter details and ownership evidence the supplier wants. If you propose an alternative to MCS, ask for a specific response on that route rather than relying on the factory's assurance.
Also ask about the tariff's eligibility conditions, application process, payment start point and any battery-related evidence. Keep the responses with the purchase specification and make model substitutions subject to a fresh installer review. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can match factory documents and shipment details to the agreed specification; obtain installation and export-payment acceptance from the relevant UK parties.
Frequently asked questions
Can Chinese solar panels qualify for SEG payments?
They can form part of an eligible installation. Check the exact model with your installer and confirm the certification and metering evidence your prospective SEG supplier wants before buying.
Are CE certificates enough for SEG?
No. Product conformity documents serve a different purpose. Ask your prospective SEG supplier to confirm the certification required for your solar installation and installer, including whether MCS or an equivalent scheme is needed.
Can I fit imported panels myself and get them certified later?
Do not assume later certification will be available. Agree the installation and certification route with an installer before buying, and ask the prospective supplier what evidence it will accept.
Do I need a smart meter for SEG?
The requirement is a meter capable of half-hourly export readings, plus an export MPAN. Ask the prospective supplier whether your existing meter is suitable and how readings will be supplied.
