Can a China-bought EV charger get a UK grant?

Potentially, but do not budget on a grant simply because a charger is advertised as UK-ready. Check applicant eligibility, the exact listed model and an authorised installer before buying. Ask how a separately purchased unit would be handled in the claim. For factory-side checks, contact Cambridge China Bridge.

Identify the relevant home grant

The electric vehicle chargepoint grant for renters and flat owners covers 75% of the cost of buying and installing a socket, capped at £500. Treat this as conditional support for an eligible installation, rather than an assumed refund on your factory order.

Households with only on-street parking have a separate home grant route involving a cross-pavement solution. Landlords also have a separate route. Establish which application fits the intended installation before comparing equipment. Our renewable equipment guide explains the wider installer acceptance issue.

Check the applicant and parking space

For the renters and flat owners grant, the applicant must live in a flat they own or rent a residential property, have private off-street parking and own or use an eligible vehicle. Living in an ordinary house you own does not qualify for this route; the guidance makes an exception for a house converted into flats where you occupy a flat.

Check the vehicle against the approved vehicle list. Gather proof of parking rights and relevant permissions. Before ordering, ask the installer to review your circumstances against the full eligibility guidance, including previous grant claims, moving plans and the property's status.

Match the exact equipment to the official list

Check the eligible chargepoint model list and its residential eligibility category. The official specifications say an unlisted model will lead to claim rejection. Match the supplier's model designation to the listing, then reconcile the quotation, rating label, instructions and proposed installation documents.

Do not use CE or UKCA marking as a substitute for checking grant eligibility. Keep product compliance and scheme listing as separate purchasing checks. Our marking guide covers the wider compliance paperwork, and test report verification helps you assess evidence matching the actual unit.

Agree the installer and direct-purchase arrangement

The application process starts with a quotation from an authorised installer. Before paying the factory, ask that installer whether they will accept your separately imported unit and handle the grant claim. Request written confirmation of the proposed model, installation scope and treatment of your equipment purchase.

Ask how the factory invoice will be reconciled with the installation quotation and claim documents. Have the installer review the supply, earthing, protective equipment and commissioning arrangements. Agree who provides on-site warranty support, replacement parts and software support. Do not rely on a supplier's assurance that any UK electrician can obtain the grant.

Set a purchase gate before paying

For the renters and flat owners route, work can start after the grant authority approves the application. The installer claims after completing the installation, and an approved claim is paid directly to the installer. Arrange the application before installation; do not plan on applying retrospectively.

Keep the eligibility review, listing match, installer acceptance, purchase-cost treatment and support arrangements together. If the direct-purchase arrangement remains unclear, ask the scheme's support service before committing. Cambridge China Bridge can use its own staff in China to check the factory's model identity and supporting documents against the agreed purchasing brief.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy a charger from China and claim the grant?

Potentially. Confirm applicant eligibility, the listed model and an authorised installer first. Ask the installer and scheme support how your separate factory purchase would be treated before paying.

Can a homeowner with a driveway get this grant?

An ordinary owner-occupied house does not qualify for the renters and flat owners route. An owner-occupied flat may qualify, subject to the parking, vehicle and other eligibility checks.

Is CE or UKCA marking enough for charger grant approval?

Check marking and grant eligibility separately. Match the exact model to the official list and confirm residential eligibility; marking alone does not establish that listing.

Can any electrician install a charger under the grant?

Use an authorised installer for the grant process. Agree acceptance of your imported unit and the claim arrangements before buying, and wait for application approval before installation.
