Buying CPAP from China: what to agree with your clinic

Before paying, ask your UK sleep clinic to confirm that the exact machine or mask suits your prescribed treatment. Agree compatibility, who sets and changes treatment settings, how the clinic will review data, and who services faults. Factory evidence can be gathered by Cambridge China Bridge.

Agree suitability for the prescribed treatment

Send the treating sleep clinic the proposed manufacturer, exact model, instructions and intended use before ordering. Ask whether it suits the patient’s prescribed therapy, including whether fixed pressure, automatic pressure adjustment or another form of breathing support is needed. Ask the clinician to assess the specific device rather than a seller’s claim that it treats sleep apnoea.

Obtain written confirmation of what the clinic is willing to assess, set up and support when equipment is bought independently. Record any conditions and who gives final clinical acceptance before use. For wider purchasing checks, see our guides to sourcing CPAP machines and sourcing CPAP masks.

Make the evidence match the exact model

Build a review pack containing label photographs, manufacturer details, model and variant references, instructions in English, conformity declarations and relevant certificates or test reports. Ask the supplier to explain which documents cover the offered configuration, including its software, humidifier and power supply. Use our test report verification guide to check document identity and scope.

MHRA does not assess or approve medical devices placed on the UK market. Treat a seller’s claim of MHRA approval as something to challenge. Ask a competent compliance adviser to review market suitability separately from the clinic’s treatment decision. Attach the accepted specification to the order and require written approval before substitutions.

Check the complete mask and breathing circuit

Ask the clinic to confirm the exact mask model, size, cushion, elbow and tubing combination against the machine and manufacturer’s instructions. MHRA guidance advises checking compatibility of third party accessories. A connector fitting into a hose is not enough to settle the clinical decision.

Ask specifically whether the mask is vented or non-vented and whether the complete circuit provides the intended exhalation route. Have the clinic assess this before use; do not improvise adapters or cover vents. Agree a fitting and leak assessment under the prescribed treatment, plus what happens if the mask causes discomfort or does not seal.

Keep treatment settings with the clinical team

Agree that the treating clinician specifies and authorises treatment settings, and name who will enter and verify them on arrival. Ask the clinic to distinguish treatment controls from comfort adjustments the patient may make. Do not ask the factory to choose pressures or copy settings from another patient or an online guide.

Confirm how the clinic will obtain usable treatment data from this exact model. Ask whether its software, data export and remote connection work with the clinic’s systems, who can access them and who can change settings remotely. Agree the initial review, later follow-up and contact route for leaks, persistent symptoms or difficulty using the equipment.

Agree servicing and a treatment continuity plan

Ask the clinic to confirm whether it will service privately purchased equipment or supply replacement consumables. If it will not, identify a repairer willing to support the exact model before buying. Agree maintenance arrangements, performance checks, cleaning instructions, replacement parts and responsibility for costs. Our spare parts and service support guide covers the supplier commitments.

Record who handles faults, warranty returns and safety notices, and ask the clinic for a treatment continuity plan during repairs. Keep serial or batch references, service records and clinical acceptance with the equipment file. Cambridge China Bridge’s staff in China can coordinate factory documents and order checks; ask the treating clinic to retain responsibility for treatment decisions.

Frequently asked questions

Will my UK sleep clinic support a CPAP bought from China?

Ask before paying. Obtain written confirmation covering the exact model, setup, treatment monitoring, servicing and consumables. Arrange another support route for anything the clinic will not provide.

Is an MHRA-approved CPAP listing enough?

MHRA does not assess or approve medical devices placed on the UK market. Challenge that wording and obtain documents matching the exact model, alongside the clinic’s treatment assessment.

Can I buy any replacement mask that fits the hose?

Ask the clinic to check the exact mask and circuit, including venting, connectors, size and leak performance. Physical fit alone does not establish suitability for the prescribed treatment.

Who should set the pressure on an imported CPAP?

Agree that the treating clinician specifies and authorises treatment settings. Name who enters and verifies them, and ask which comfort adjustments the patient may make.
