Cot and mattress from China: safety checks
Before ordering a cot and mattress from China, check reports for the exact models, assess them together for fit and gaps, test moving-side locks and trial the assembly instructions. Keep the sleep space firm, flat and clear. Factory checks can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Identify the exact cot and mattress
Ask for separate model references for the cot and mattress, photographs of the assembled combination and the proposed instructions. Describe whether you want a standalone cot, travel cot or bedside crib. Our nursery product safety guide covers product classification and selecting applicable standards.
Request complete reports showing the tested frame, base, side mechanisms, mattress construction and cover. Ask the laboratory to identify untested configurations and explain any differences from your order. Use our report coverage guide to check whether the evidence actually covers the goods.
Check mattress fit on the assembled cot
Specify the cot's internal sleeping dimensions and the mattress's length, width, thickness and permitted tolerances. Ask for photographs and recorded measurements with the actual mattress fitted. A shared catalogue size or the phrase “standard cot mattress” is not enough to approve the combination.
Have the laboratory assess edge and corner gaps, mattress movement and edge compression against the applicable test methods. Include every intended base position and permitted configuration. Check compressed mattresses after unpacking according to the supplier's recovery instructions. Do not approve a poor fit by adding padding or improvising a filler.
Examine gaps, sides and locking mechanisms
Ask the laboratory to assess openings between bars, end panels, the base and moving sides, including potential head, limb, finger and clothing traps. Request results for the actual hardware. Agree how inspectors will check loose bars, missing fasteners, sharp edges and differences from the tested construction.
Operate adjustable sides, folding joints and locks on an assembled sample without a baby present. Check that engagement is clear and the side remains secure during the agreed inspection checks. Ask for evidence covering durability and unintended release. Do not remove a cot side to create a bedside crib; assess a purpose-designed bedside model and its attachment system separately.
Trial the instructions before approving production
Have someone unfamiliar with the product assemble a packed sample using only the supplied English instructions and fittings. Record ambiguous diagrams, reversible parts and steps that could leave a side or base unsecured. Ask for clear guidance on mattress selection, base adjustment, locking, maintenance and when each configuration should stop being used.
An OPSS bedside-crib safety report identifies missing English instructions and safety information as a concern. Check that the manual matches the delivered parts and shows any intended attachment to an adult bed. Resolve assembly problems before production approval. Our laboratory testing guide explains how testing differs from shipment inspection.

Keep safer sleep separate from product approval
UK safer-sleep advice is to place babies on their backs, use a firm, flat mattress and keep the cot clear of toys, pillows, loose bedding, bumpers, wedges and straps. Babies should sleep in the same room as their parent or carer, day and night, for the first six months. Check that catalogue photographs and included accessories support this advice.
Before shipment, compare production samples with the approved cot-and-mattress combination, repeat the agreed fit and assembly checks, and confirm the correct manual is packed. Hold approval if fit, locks or evidence remain unresolved. Cambridge China Bridge can use its own staff in China to coordinate sample checks and factory follow-up.
Frequently asked questions
Can I trust a factory cot safety certificate?
Request the complete report and verify it with its issuer. Match the frame, hardware, mattress and instructions to your order, and ask the laboratory to assess any differences.
How do I check whether a cot mattress fits?
Check the actual mattress in the assembled cot. Record dimensions and have the laboratory assess edge gaps, corners, movement and compression using the applicable test methods.
What should I check on a cot with moving sides?
Check lock engagement, secure fittings and evidence for durability, unintended release and trapping hazards. Resolve uncertain operation before approving the order or using the cot.
Should I buy cot bumpers with the mattress?
UK safer-sleep guidance says to keep bumpers out of the cot, alongside pillows, toys, loose bedding, wedges and straps. Check that the supplier's bundle and photographs follow that advice.
