Buying a home IPL device from China: safety checks
Before ordering, check the exact model's skin and hair suitability, contraindications, optical safety evidence and protective features. Review the English instructions and arrange access to qualified clinical and technical advice. Factory evidence and sample checks can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Define who can use the device
Request the exact model's skin-tone and hair-colour suitability chart before approving a sample. Ask specifically about very dark skin and white, grey, red or light blonde hair. Treat claims such as suitable for everyone as unresolved until supported by model-specific safety and effectiveness evidence. Match your intended customers and treatment areas to the documented limits.
Check that the English manual distinguishes unsuitable skin from hair colours that may not respond. Ask how recent tanning, sunburn and differences in skin tone across body areas affect use. A skin sensor does not establish hair suitability. Put these limitations in the buying specification and customer information, rather than leaving them inside a leaflet delivered after purchase.
Review contraindications before any user trial
Ask for a contraindication and warning checklist reviewed by a clinician familiar with light-based hair removal. Check its treatment of pregnancy, breastfeeding, light-sensitive conditions, medicines that increase light sensitivity, skin disease and previous adverse reactions. Resolve missing or ambiguous guidance before arranging a user trial. Do not ask factory sales staff to clear an individual's medical suitability.
Check the instructions for tattoos, moles, damaged skin, the eye area and other excluded treatment sites. Require clear preparation, patch-test, observation and aftercare instructions specific to the model. Follow the manufacturer's stated waiting periods rather than inventing a schedule. A successful patch test should never be presented as permission to ignore a contraindication.
Ask for optical evidence for home use
IPL uses different technology from a laser. Do not accept a laser classification certificate as the complete optical safety evidence for an IPL device. Ask a competent optical safety specialist to identify the applicable assessment methods for the exact home-use product. Our CE, UKCA and ISO guide explains the different roles of markings and supporting documents.
Request measurements of the emitted spectrum, energy delivered to the skin, pulse duration and output consistency across settings and attachments. Ask whether the assessment addresses eye exposure, unintended flashing and foreseeable misuse in a home. Resolve exclusions with the specialist. Use our test-report verification guide for authentication and sample matching.
Test the protective features
Ask the laboratory to demonstrate the skin-contact interlock, any skin-tone rejection or automatic adjustment, output limits and overheating protection. Include loss of contact during automatic flashing and sensor faults in the agreed assessment. Require documented results and acceptance criteria. Do not test eye safety by looking into the aperture or bypassing a sensor yourself.
Check optical filter identity, attachment recognition, warning messages and controls against the assessed design. Ask the specialist whether protective eyewear is needed for the intended use and, if so, what evidence supports the supplied eyewear. Generic tinted glasses are insufficient evidence. Agree which lamp, filter, sensor or software changes need review before the factory makes them.

Arrange qualified advice and a release decision
Before ordering, identify a clinician for individual suitability questions and an optical safety specialist for product evidence. Ask about relevant experience, qualifications and access to the exact manual and reports. Test the support route with a contraindication question. Customer service should explain how to obtain qualified advice, rather than diagnose conditions or recommend stopping prescribed medicine.
Agree instructions to stop use and seek medical advice for burns, blistering or eye symptoms, plus a route for reporting device faults. Record unresolved evidence gaps and hold the order until they are resolved. Our pre-payment checklist covers the wider shipment decision. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can coordinate factory documents and sample checks.
Frequently asked questions
Does home IPL work on every skin tone and hair colour?
Do not assume so. Request the exact model's suitability chart and evidence for its claims. Check very dark skin and white, grey, red or light blonde hair explicitly.
Can I use IPL while taking medication?
Check the exact manual and ask a pharmacist or clinician about your medicine and light sensitivity before use. Do not stop prescribed medicine on a supplier's advice.
Is a CE mark enough to buy an IPL device?
A mark alone does not answer the buying checks. Review model-specific optical evidence, protective features, contraindications and instructions before approving the order.
Do home IPL devices need protective glasses?
Follow the exact model's assessed instructions. Ask an optical safety specialist to resolve unclear eyewear advice. Supplied glasses do not replace working protective features.
