Compare China and UK appliance energy consumption

Compare the exact models using energy consumption measured for the same task, capacity and test conditions. Check each label scheme and test method before comparing grades, then estimate costs using your tariff and expected use. Ask Cambridge China Bridge to obtain model-specific evidence from the factory.

Check the label scheme before comparing grades

Request a readable label and its supporting information for each appliance. Record the scheme name, product category, scale version and test method. UK official guidance explains that some energy labels are being rescaled. Do not assume that a China-market grade corresponds to a UK grade, or that an older scale matches a newer one.

Use grades as a comparison only after confirming that the classification basis matches. Otherwise, compare consumption data under matched conditions. For destination labelling, use our GB appliance energy label guide and factory labels and manuals guide.

Obtain evidence for the exact model

Ask for the full model identifier, including its suffix, label photograph, product information sheet or equivalent data sheet, manual and complete energy test report. Match these to the sample and proposed production specification. Ask the factory to explain whether its China-market and export versions differ in motor, compressor, controls, firmware or power supply.

Reject a brochure covering a whole range as the sole evidence for your chosen model. Follow our test report verification guide to check the report's identity and scope. Ask Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China to obtain missing documents and record unresolved mismatches before you approve the comparison.

Match the task and test conditions

Make a comparison sheet covering useful capacity, consumption unit, measurement period, programme, load, temperature settings, ambient conditions and supply voltage and frequency. For washing, check cleaning performance as well as energy use; for refrigeration, check storage volume and maintained temperature. Do not rank appliances solely by consumption if they deliver different results.

Ask a competent laboratory whether the test methods are comparable. Converting units does not resolve different programmes, loads or test conditions. If the methods cannot be reconciled, commission a matched test with an agreed protocol. Keep that practical trial separate from any evidence used to support an official label.

Calculate costs from disclosed assumptions

For a cycle-based appliance, multiply measured energy per cycle by expected cycles, then by your electricity unit rate. For a continuously operated appliance, use consumption measured over a stated period and explain how you project it to your usage period. Use the same tariff and usage assumptions for both models.

Do not calculate consumption from the rated power on the appliance plate alone. Ask what the measurement includes, such as standby, heating or drying. Keep water, maintenance and other operating costs separate. Date the tariff, state how VAT is treated and describe the result as an estimate under the listed assumptions.

Withhold unsupported savings claims

Ask the supplier to identify the comparison model, test evidence, tariff, usage assumptions and calculation behind any claim that an appliance is cheaper to run. If these are missing, record the claim as unsupported and leave it out of your purchasing recommendation and sales copy. Retain the documents and calculation behind any comparison you do use.

The UK competition authority's environmental claims guidance says comparisons should compare like with like and businesses should hold robust, credible, relevant and current supporting evidence. Apply those checks before describing an appliance as more energy efficient. For broader environmental wording, see our supplier green claims guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I compare Chinese and UK energy label grades?

Only after checking that the scheme, scale and classification basis match. Otherwise, compare model-specific consumption under matched test conditions rather than translating a grade.

Does lower rated power mean lower running costs?

Rated power alone does not establish consumption for your task. Obtain measured energy use, including the relevant operating modes, and apply the same tariff and usage assumptions to both appliances.

What if the factory has no comparable energy report?

Record the evidence gap. Ask a competent laboratory to assess the available methods and propose a matched test. Leave savings claims out until the comparison has adequate support.

Can I use the supplier's annual running-cost claim?

Ask for the exact model, comparator, consumption evidence, tariff and usage calculation. Recalculate for your intended use and describe the result as an estimate with stated assumptions.
