Why do Chinese suppliers use identical photos?

Identical photos may come from a shared catalogue, resellers of the same factory's goods or copied listings. They do not prove identical products, available stock or factory ownership. Trace the images, request fresh evidence and match each offered model to a written description before paying for samples. Cambridge China Bridge can help.

Treat shared photos as a lead

Several sellers may use a factory's catalogue, buy through the same wholesaler or copy an image while offering a different version. A listing may also advertise something the seller would source after receiving an order. These are possibilities to investigate, not conclusions about any particular supplier. Matching photos alone are not evidence of fraud.

Separate the questions: where did the image come from, what does this seller actually offer, and who holds or makes it? Our guide to finding an item from a photo covers the search brief. Here, the task is to distinguish suppliers already advertising your chosen item.

Trace the image without assuming its origin

Save each listing address, seller name, selected variant and dated screenshot. Search the main image with Google Lens, then try a crop showing a distinctive fitting or label. Search visible model names and watermark text separately. Open matching pages and record differences in descriptions, branding and specifications. Keep the original image alongside any search crops.

The earliest page you find is not proof of the original photographer or manufacturer. A watermark can identify another lead without proving ownership, and missing search results prove little. Ask each seller where the photo came from and which pictured version they offer. UK guidance says permission is generally needed to use web images on a commercial website; investigate stock without assuming you can reuse its advertising photos.

Ask for fresh evidence of actual stock

Send each supplier a different enquiry phrase and ask for fresh photos showing it handwritten beside the offered item. Request views of the underside, connectors, fittings, model label and packaging, plus measurements taken on camera. Ask for an uncut video moving from the labelled carton to the unpacked item. A digital date overlay alone does not establish freshness.

Ask where the item is held, who controls that stock and whether the sample would come from it. Distinguish saleable stock from a showroom piece, a borrowed sample or an item still to be sourced. During a live call, request an unexpected close-up or action. This supports access to an item, not ownership of a factory or availability of the whole order. See factory versus trading company checks.

Compare the offered versions in writing

Create a comparison sheet with a separate entry for each supplier. Record the seller's model reference, declared manufacturer, stock location, dimensions, material, finish, fittings, accessories and packaging. Attach the fresh evidence and mark every field as observed, supplier-declared or unresolved. Supplier model codes may differ for the same item, while matching codes may conceal different versions.

For example, identical photos of a storage box can conceal a different hinge, thinner wall or missing insert. Ask suppliers to explain discrepancies rather than deciding from appearance. Classify offers as a supported match to the agreed description, a known alternative or unresolved. Use the product specification guide to define the features that matter; photographs cannot establish material grade or hidden construction.

Tie the sample payment to the evidence

Before paying, get written confirmation identifying the sample model, configuration, included parts and fresh evidence it corresponds to. Ask whether it is drawn from the shown stock or will be made or obtained separately. Agree sample and delivery charges, dispatch arrangements and what happens if that version is unavailable. Require approval before substitution. Pause if the seller cannot connect the proposed sample to an identifiable item.

Do not buy duplicate samples merely because suppliers share photographs. Choose candidates with resolved essential details, or order alternatives deliberately where differences need physical checking. On arrival, compare the sample with its supplier record before using the fair sample comparison guide. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can help request evidence and investigate discrepancies; any visit should record what was actually seen.

Frequently asked questions

Do identical supplier photos mean it is a scam?

No. Shared catalogues, resellers and copied listings are possible explanations. Ask each seller for fresh evidence of the exact version offered and resolve contradictions before paying.

Can reverse image search find the original factory?

It can reveal matching pages, watermarks and model names to investigate. It cannot establish the original factory or prove that a seller holds stock.

What should I ask suppliers to film?

Ask for your enquiry phrase beside the item, an uncut view from carton to product, labels, fittings and measurements. A live request for an unexpected close-up helps check access to the item.

Should I pay every supplier for a sample?

First compare fresh evidence and written configurations. Buy samples to resolve meaningful differences or assess shortlisted suppliers, with each sample tied to the confirmed version.
