Are China-bought LED headlight bulbs legal in the UK?

Do not assume a China-bought LED bulb is legal because it fits. Ask DVSA or your installer to confirm the current GB MOT treatment of the exact halogen-to-LED bulb conversion, including any approved-retrofit route; complete LED headlamps are treated separately. Check current guidance, approval evidence and the exact vehicle before paying. Arrange sourcing checks with Cambridge China Bridge.

Check the current MOT position before ordering

The currently published GOV.UK car MOT manual contains a restriction on converting existing halogen headlamps to LED bulbs on vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1986. Before treating a conversion as an automatic failure for an incompatible light source and lamp, ask DVSA or your installer to confirm how current instructions and any approved-retrofit route apply to the exact product. This guide addresses Great Britain; ask about Northern Ireland separately.

Before paying, ask your installer to recheck the live manual and resolve any newer DVSA instruction affecting the proposed bulb. Record the guidance used and the exact product assessed. For the wider vehicle assessment and insurer discussion, use our car modification guide.

Separate a bulb swap from a complete headlamp

A replacement bulb leaves the existing reflector, lens and housing in place. A complete replacement headlamp replaces that assembly. The published MOT manual expressly distinguishes complete replacement units constructed with LED light sources from the bulb-conversion restriction. Do not let a seller describe a loose bulb kit as a complete approved headlamp.

For a complete unit, ask the installer to review its approval evidence and installed performance. The lighting regulations require covered dipped-beam headlamps to be designed for driving on the left-hand side of the road. Ask for checks of beam direction, aim, mounting, switching and any levelling or cleaning equipment relevant to the proposed installation.

Match approval evidence to the actual product

Request photographs of the bulb or lamp markings, its exact manufacturer and model, the approval document, installation instructions and any vehicle or headlamp compatibility list. Ask the installer or an approval specialist to identify what the documents actually cover and whether they support the intended road use. Use our test-report verification guide to check document identity.

Treat claims such as 'road legal', 'error free' and 'fits your car' as questions to investigate. Ask whether the evidence concerns the light source, a complete lamp or another function. Match the delivered item to that evidence. If the seller cannot explain the approval scope, hold payment rather than accept a photograph of a certificate.

Get vehicle-specific installer checks

Send the vehicle identification details, first-use date, exact variant and photographs of the existing headlamp markings. Establish whether the original system uses halogen, HID or LED, and whether it is a reflector or projector lamp. Ask the installer to check bulb seating, retaining clips, rear-cover clearance, cooling space, wiring, connectors and dashboard warnings.

Agree an installed trial and a beam check with suitable equipment. Include dipped and main beam operation, flicker, heat, sealing and any adaptive functions. Road use that causes undue dazzle or discomfort is prohibited. An MOT certificate does not guarantee vehicle safety, so keep a written record of the completed installation checks.

Make satisfactory evidence a payment condition

Put the installer-reviewed product identity, required documents, accessories and acceptance checks into the order. Require written agreement to substitutions. Agree what happens if the goods differ from the approved sample or the installer rejects them, including return freight and removal costs. Our pre-payment guide covers the supplier and shipment checks.

Cambridge China Bridge has its own staff in China to compare factory goods, markings, packaging and documents against your agreed brief. Arrange the UK vehicle assessment separately. Release payment only when the outstanding approval and fitting questions have been resolved for the actual product and vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

Will LED bulbs in halogen headlights pass an MOT?

The published GB car manual contains a conversion restriction for vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1986. Ask DVSA or the installer to confirm the current treatment of the exact product, including any approved-retrofit route, and check the live manual and any newer DVSA instruction before buying.

Are complete LED replacement headlights legal?

The published MOT manual treats complete LED headlamps separately from bulb conversions. Have their approval evidence, vehicle compatibility and finished installation assessed before road use.

Does an approval mark prove the bulb fits my car?

Ask for the approval document and its scope, then match the exact product and headlamp to it. A seller's compatibility claim should still go through your installer.

What should my installer check before I pay?

Ask for a written decision on current guidance, approval evidence, exact headlamp compatibility, physical fit, electrical operation and installed beam checks, with unresolved points listed.
