Getting started

Are Chinese bicycle lights legal in the UK?

China-bought lights and reflectors can be suitable, but brightness alone is insufficient. For Great Britain, check the required colours, reflectors, approval evidence, flashing behaviour and fitted visibility before night riding. Ask Cambridge China Bridge to collect the exact factory documents.

Specify the complete night-riding equipment

In Great Britain, bicycles used between sunset and sunrise need a white front light, red rear light and red rear reflector. Modern bicycles also need amber pedal reflectors, facing forwards and backwards on each pedal. The lights must be lit at night. Do not approve a lighting set without checking the separate reflectors.

The government lighting guidance covers Great Britain, excluding Northern Ireland. For Northern Ireland use, obtain a separate review of the applicable requirements before describing stock as road legal. Our bicycle checks before riding cover the separate assembly and mechanical inspection.

Match approval evidence to the exact product

Government guidance says an obligatory lamp capable of steady operation must meet the British Standard for cycle lamps and carry the relevant marking, even when used flashing. It also identifies the British Standard for pedal and rear reflectors. Corresponding standards can qualify where equivalent safety and marking requirements are met; ask a compliance reviewer to assess any alternative.

Request clear marking photographs and complete reports identifying the supplied lamp or reflector, lens, housing and operating configuration. Ask the reviewer to reconcile those documents with the road-lighting requirements. Do not accept a generic CE document or a brightness advertisement as the complete evidence file. Our test report verification guide explains document checks.

Check flashing capability, not just the selected mode

A lamp that only flashes has a different route: government guidance specifies between 60 and 240 equal flashes per minute and luminous intensity of at least 4 candela. Selecting flashing mode on a lamp that also offers steady operation does not remove its standard and marking requirements.

Request a demonstration of every available mode and supporting measurements for the proposed road-use mode. Record whether flashes are evenly spaced and whether controls remember the selected setting. The Highway Code recommends a steady front lamp where there is no street lighting. Trial that setting for seeing the road, rather than judging only how conspicuous the flashing looks.

Trial the mounts on a loaded bicycle

Approval evidence does not settle the installation: the regulations also require the applicable installation, alignment and performance requirements to be met. Give the reviewer a fitting drawing showing mounting heights, lateral positions and directions. As a practical starting point, trial central mounts on the bicycle, with the front lamp facing forwards and the rear lamp and reflector facing backwards.

Try the supplied brackets on the intended handlebar, seatpost or rack. Check that luggage, clothing and mudguards do not hide the lamps or reflector. Turn the cranks to check pedal-reflector visibility. Test whether vibration changes the beam direction or loosens the brackets. Treat a helmet or bag light as supplementary when planning the bicycle-mounted equipment.

Inspect performance beyond advertised brightness

Trial beam shape, useful road illumination and visibility from approaching and following positions. Aim the front beam to avoid glare. Check sustained output as the battery runs down, low-battery warnings, switches with gloves, charging-port seals and bracket retention. Request evidence for rain-resistance claims. Our battery-powered bicycle light sourcing guide covers the wider purchasing brief.

Agree the accepted lamp, reflector, bracket, battery and instructions before production. Retain an approved sample and require review of substitutions. Use our quality inspection guide to brief production checks, while keeping laboratory measurements separate from visual inspection. Cambridge China Bridge’s own staff in China can collect model-specific documents and check the agreed goods before shipment.

Frequently asked questions

Are bicycle lights bought from China road legal?

They can be. For Great Britain, check the exact lamps, required reflectors, approval evidence, operating modes and installation. Arrange a separate requirements review for Northern Ireland.

Can I use flashing bicycle lights at night?

Yes, subject to the lighting requirements. Purely flashing obligatory lamps need 60 to 240 equal flashes per minute and at least 4 candela. Lamps with a steady mode still need the relevant standard and marking evidence.

Does a rear bicycle light replace the reflector?

No. Night-riding equipment includes a red rear reflector as well as the red rear light. Check that the reflector remains visible with luggage fitted.

What should I check besides bicycle light brightness?

Check approval markings and reports, beam shape, battery runtime in the intended mode, rain-resistance evidence, bracket security and visibility on the loaded bicycle.
