UK duty on battery-powered bicycle lights

Heading 8512 includes electrical lighting and signalling equipment used on bicycles or motor vehicles, together with other vehicle equipment and parts. Complete battery-powered bicycle lights fall within the bicycle lighting line, 8512 10 00 00. The table shows product variants sharing that commodity line.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the bicycle lighting line carries 2% duty for goods from China. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measure, suspension or attached import control for this line. Suspensions elsewhere in the heading do not extend to this bicycle-light line.

Confirm the commodity code using the complete light's function and specification, particularly when ordering parts or separate light sources. See the wider vehicle lights and horns guide for other products within the heading.

Specify the battery, light modes and mount

Specify front or rear use, replaceable or rechargeable batteries, battery chemistry, charging connection, operating modes and runtime at the agreed brightness. Include beam shape, side visibility, switch operation, low-battery indication and mounting dimensions. For night cycling, the Highway Code requires white front and red rear lights to be lit.

Ask for model-matched electromagnetic compatibility and restricted-substance test evidence, the declaration of conformity and an explanation of the CE or UKCA marking used. For apparatus within electromagnetic compatibility scope, manufacturers must provide relevant instructions in English. Restricted-substance guidance requires the importer's name or trademark and contactable address on the product or packaging.

Where your business is an electrical-equipment producer, registration is annual. The battery registration route depends on battery type and the amount placed on the market. Establish these arrangements before selling lights with batteries included.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5,000 bicycle front and rear light sets under 8512 10 00 00, invoiced at £40,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £43,000. Duty at 2% is £860. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £43,860, so it is £8,772. Import taxes total £9,632; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £860 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Light and runtime: check colour, beam shape and every operating mode against the approved sample. Measure runtime at the agreed brightness, including how output changes as the battery discharges.

Battery and charging: check the fitted cell against the specification, charge and discharge samples, and examine temperature rise, charging-port fit, battery contacts and low-battery indication.

Mount and sealing: fit samples to the agreed handlebar and seatpost shapes. Check strap grip, bracket retention and beam movement after vibration; test the agreed water-resistance claim and inspect for moisture.

Documents and labels: match the supplied model to reports and declarations. Check importer details, instructions, battery information and carton contents during inspection.

What goes wrong

A light can appear bright when first switched on but lose useful output well before the advertised runtime. Other failure points include loose battery contacts, charging ports that admit water, straps that slip on smooth tubing and brackets that rotate over rough surfaces. Agree repeatable tests rather than accepting a demonstration video.

A changed battery, circuit board or housing can leave reports describing a different product. Match documents to the bulk specification and repeat functional checks on arrival. Keep stock with swelling batteries, intermittent operation or water ingress out of sale while the fault is investigated.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on battery-powered bicycle lights from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 2% duty under 8512 10 00 00, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing measure, suspension or attached import control.

What colour should bicycle lights be for night use?

The Highway Code requires white front and red rear lights to be lit at night. Specify the colour and intended mounting position separately for each light.

How do I check a bicycle light's claimed battery life?

Agree the operating mode and brightness, then measure runtime and changing light output on samples from the shipment. Check the fitted battery matches the approved specification.

What should I request from a Chinese bicycle-light factory?

Request the battery specification, mounting drawing, runtime results, sealing test evidence, model-matched compliance reports, declaration of conformity and proposed labels and instructions.
