Will a Chinese balustrade or staircase fit my home?
It can be suitable if the complete installed system is designed for your home. Arrange a local survey, structural calculations, glazing and guarding evidence, and a fixing design before manufacture. Resolve building-control questions before releasing drawings. Coordinate the factory brief with Cambridge China Bridge.

Start with a local survey
Appoint a local designer and installer before choosing a catalogue kit. Have them record finished floor levels, the stair opening, headroom, landings, doors, guarding edges and delivery access. Identify the supporting structure beneath finishes, including its condition. Photographs and homeowner measurements are useful for enquiries, but commission a measured survey before approving production drawings. For a child safety gate, see our guide to checking staircase fit.
For an English project, the relevant official guidance includes Approved Document K on protection from falling, collision and impact. For a home elsewhere in the UK, ask the local building-control team which guidance to use. Our construction materials guide covers product declarations and marking; this guide adds the checks for the installed assembly.
Design the complete load path
Ask a structural engineer to assess the complete system: treads, stringers, landings, glass, posts or base channels, connections, anchors and the existing structure. Agree who designs each interface. Approved Document K guidance calls for guarding to resist the loads referenced in its named standards. Have the engineer select the appropriate design basis for the intended use.
Give the engineer the surveyed dimensions and proposed materials. Ask for calculations and drawings showing loads passing through connections into the building, with deflection and movement considered. For stairs, ask the designer to review step geometry, headroom, landings, handrails and escape arrangements. A factory drawing should be reviewed against this project design before fabrication.
Match glass and guarding evidence to the design
Ask the designer to specify the glass build-up, treatment, interlayer where used, panel dimensions, edge finish, holes, supports and any handrail. Request evidence for impact behaviour and guarding performance, and ask how the assembly behaves if a pane breaks. Do not choose glass thickness or assume that a description such as safety glass answers these questions.
Compare each report with the proposed assembly: glass composition, panel size, support spacing, clamps, channels and handrail arrangement. Ask the engineer to explain any differences between the tested specimen and your design. Use our test-report verification guide to check the report itself. Treat component evidence and evidence for the assembled barrier as separate checks.
Specify fixings for the actual structure
Have the engineer specify anchors and connections for the surveyed concrete, masonry, timber or steel. Record the fixing product, embedment, spacing, edge distances, installation method and any site testing the engineer requests. Ask how finishes, waterproofing, corrosion exposure and access for tightening affect the detail. Resolve uncertain substrate conditions through local investigation before manufacture.
Ask the installer to review the fixing layout, lifting method, assembly sequence and tolerances before accepting the kit. Agree who supplies anchors, shims, seals and other installation materials. Require instructions that match the approved drawings. A supplied bag of bolts is not enough information to establish whether the connection suits your home.

Review the pack before releasing manufacture
Send the survey, coordinated drawings, calculations, glass evidence and fixing details to building control. Ask whether approval is needed, which application route suits the work and what inspections to arrange. Under the building-notice route, you do not receive the formal approval available with full plans. For a bespoke kit, discuss a route that allows design questions to be resolved before committing to manufacture. For self-build projects, see our guide to warranty acceptance of China materials.
Make written production release depend on resolved review comments and approval by your designer and installer. Freeze the drawing revision and component schedule using our design revision guide. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can coordinate the factory against that pack. Check dimensions, materials, component identification and packaging before shipment; retain installation records and any completion documents with the home’s project file.
Frequently asked questions
Can I order a staircase using my own measurements?
Use them for an initial enquiry. Before manufacture, commission a local measured survey and have the designer and installer agree the production dimensions, supporting structure and fixing details.
Does CE marking prove a glass balustrade suits my home?
Do not use marking as the sole basis for ordering. Ask your designer to assess the complete assembly, its evidence, fixings and supporting structure against your surveyed project.
What glass thickness do I need for a balustrade?
Ask the designer to specify it from the panel dimensions, supports, intended use and evidence. Also agree the glass build-up and behaviour after breakage before the factory cuts or drills panels.
Should building control review the kit before manufacture?
Arrange an early review of the project drawings and evidence. Ask which approval route applies and resolve design comments before releasing bespoke manufacture. A building notice does not provide formal plans approval.
