How to check factory label durability

Test the complete label on the actual production surface, using the factory's application process. Agree cleaning, rubbing and environmental exposures that reflect use, then check attachment and readability against written acceptance criteria. Define what the label must survive

List where the label sits, who handles it and how the product is cleaned, stored and used. Identify contact with hands, clothing, adjacent parts, moisture, heat and sunlight where relevant. Separate labels intended to be removed from labels expected to remain throughout use. Approve the wording and layout through our artwork guide, then assess durability separately.

Check the product category and destination before choosing a test method. For radio equipment supplied in Great Britain, official guidance says the conformity assessment marking should be affixed visibly, legibly and indelibly to the equipment. Treat the trials below as a purchasing specification; ask a competent laboratory to identify any applicable product-specific marking tests. For shared artwork, see shared labels for GB and Northern Ireland.

Use the real production surface and process

Ask for labelled production parts with the actual plastic, paint, coating, texture and curvature. A label on a smooth sample panel does not establish performance on a textured housing. Record surface preparation, contamination risks, application temperature, pressure and the waiting period before testing. Include awkward positions, edges and seams where labels may lift.

Specify the label material, adhesive, ink or ribbon, protective layer and supplier references. For plates or sewn labels, record the fastening or stitching method. Ask the factory to show the application process on the line. Use our factory audit guide for wider process checks, while keeping these label details in the production specification.

Reproduce cleaning and abrasion in use

Give the tester the intended cleaning products and their use instructions. Agree dilution, contact time, temperature, wiping material, pressure, repetitions and drying conditions in writing. Include repeated cleaning where expected. Check labels while wet and after drying for ink transfer, fading, swelling, bubbles, movement and edge lifting. Use stronger chemicals only where that exposure is credible.

Reproduce rubbing from handling, stacking or moving parts with a defined contact material and action. Where relevant, combine cleaning with subsequent abrasion, rather than testing each exposure only on fresh labels. Keep an unexposed comparison sample. A fingernail scratch or an unspecified tape pull may reveal a weakness, but cannot establish durability throughout use.

Agree acceptance criteria and retain evidence

Write observable pass and fail conditions before testing. Specify which text and symbols must remain readable, whether any edge lifting is acceptable, and whether the label may move, split or detach. If a barcode matters, verify it after exposure as well as before; our barcode guide covers that separate check.

Require a report identifying the product finish, label construction, material batches, application process, exposure conditions and results. Keep labelled before-and-after photographs, close views of failures and retained tested samples. Record deviations and who selected the specimens. Match laboratory evidence to the tested construction using our test-report guide; a generic adhesive datasheet does not prove the finished label passed.

Make bulk approval conditional on the result

Approve a defined combination of label, surface finish and application process. Hold bulk labelling if failures remain unexplained. Ask for the cause, proposed correction and a repeat trial on corrected production parts. A replacement adhesive or protective coating needs its own evidence before approval.

Keep the approved sample, specification and report linked to the order. Require written approval before changes to label materials, printing, surface finish or application method. During production, check that the agreed preparation and application process is followed. At final inspection, select actual goods for the agreed label checks; treat shipment approval separately from sample approval. For requests to omit checks, see our guide to skipping agreed production checks.

Frequently asked questions

Is a waterproof label enough?

No. Ask what was tested, on which surface and under which conditions. Water resistance alone does not demonstrate resistance to cleaners, rubbing or edge lifting.

Can I test labels on a flat sample panel?

Use it for initial comparisons, then confirm performance on production parts with the actual finish, curvature and factory application process.

How long should I test factory labels?

Agree exposure duration and repetitions from expected use and any applicable product-specific test method. Record them before testing; avoid an arbitrary universal trial.

What evidence should I get before bulk labelling?

Get the approved construction and process, a report with exposure conditions and results, before-and-after photographs, retained samples and written acceptance of any deviations.
