Buying a tent from China for UK camping
Before buying, match fire-performance evidence to the exact tent, pitch a sample to check escape openings and ventilation, and verify rain and wind claims against your planned campsite. Never cook inside a tent; an advertised chimney opening does not establish stove safety. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate factory evidence and sample checks.

Match fire evidence to the tent you will receive
Ask for the complete fire-performance report, with the test method, standard edition, results and tested sample identification. Match the fabric, coating, inner tent, groundsheet and treatments to your specification. Ask the laboratory to explain which components and hazards the report covers. A supplier's 'fireproof' description is not enough. Our guide to verifying product test reports explains document checks.
An OPSS report identified highly flammable fabric that did not self-extinguish as a serious tent hazard. Treat flame-retardant wording as a claim requiring evidence, not permission to expose the tent to flames. Require factory approval records for any material or coating change, and ask whether the existing report still covers the changed product.
Try the escape openings on a pitched sample
Pitch the complete tent with its inner compartments, flysheet and intended sleeping equipment. From each sleeping area, check that occupants can reach and operate the exit from inside. Try the zips in darkness with a torch, check for snagging fabric, and assess whether the opening suits the intended users. Photograph the route through every enclosing layer.
Check whether luggage, guy ropes or a proposed stove position obstructs escape. Ask a competent tent-testing laboratory to assess opening dimensions and layout against the appropriate camping-tent standard. The Home Office's outdoor fire guidance for England also advises knowing how to escape by cutting out of a tent during a fire. Discuss that emergency plan before the trip.
Check ventilation with the rain covers closed
Inspect the pitched tent in its bad-weather configuration, with doors and rain covers closed as instructed. Identify the air paths through the inner tent and flysheet. Check whether bedding, luggage or fabric can block them. Ask for evidence assessing ventilation for the advertised occupancy and configuration, rather than accepting a photograph of an open door.
The same OPSS report identified inadequate ventilation openings alongside the fabric hazard. Have a laboratory confirm the applicable ventilation criteria for your design. Also ask how the tent manages condensation and how occupants should keep vents clear in rain. Do not accept opening a door as the supplier's answer to every ventilation question.
Specify the weather and campsite conditions
Tell the factory whether the tent is for sheltered campsite use, exposed coastal ground or upland camping, and describe the season and expected weather. Ask for supporting rain and wind test reports, including how the tent was pitched, anchored and loaded. Request written use limitations. A seasonal label or fabric waterproof rating alone does not demonstrate the performance of the assembled tent.
Have a sample checked for leakage at seams, doors and the groundsheet, as well as pole joints, guy attachment points, pegs and tension adjustment. Check that wet fabric does not contact bedding and that rain protection leaves the intended ventilation working. Put these tasks in the inspection brief, with agreed acceptance criteria and photographs of the pitched sample.

Challenge stove claims before approving the order
The Home Office's outdoor fire guidance for England says never to cook inside a tent and to keep cooking appliances away from tent walls. Plan cooking outdoors, away from the tent. For the appliance itself, see our camping gas stove checks. Vents, flame-retardant fabric and an alarm do not establish that an advertised indoor arrangement is safe.
For a tent advertised with a wood stove, ask for a competent assessment of the exact tent, stove, flue, heat clearances, floor protection and ventilation, supported by compatible instructions. HSE warns that solid-fuel appliances inside tents can expose people to carbon monoxide poisoning. A chimney opening alone is insufficient evidence. Hold approval if the arrangement remains unresolved, and use our balance-payment checklist for the wider order checks.
Frequently asked questions
What fire certificate should I ask for a camping tent?
Ask for the full fire-performance test report identifying the method, standard edition and tested materials. Match it to the exact tent and ask the laboratory to explain its scope.
How do I check a tent's escape openings?
Pitch it with the inner compartments and bedding. Check that intended users can reach and open the exits from inside, through every enclosing layer. Ask a laboratory to assess the layout and dimensions.
Is a waterproof rating enough for UK camping?
Ask for evidence covering the assembled tent, including seams, doors, groundsheet, anchoring and wind behaviour. Match its documented limitations to the campsite and expected weather.
Does a chimney opening make a tent stove safe?
A chimney opening does not establish safety. Ask for a competent assessment of the complete arrangement. Official guidance says never to cook inside a tent; solid-fuel appliances in tents can pose a carbon monoxide risk.
