Buying a camping gas stove: UK safety checks
Verify the named fuel and cartridge connection, conformity documents for the exact stove and gas supply, and recorded leak checks on production samples. Require clear outdoor-use warnings: a portable camping stove should not be used inside tents or vehicles. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate factory checks in China.

Specify the fuel and cartridge together
Ask the factory to name the fuel or fuel mixture and the exact compatible cartridge, including its valve and connection design. Distinguish screw connections, locking connections and pierceable cartridges. Obtain connection drawings and cartridge identification details. A description such as 'universal camping gas' is too vague to approve.
Put the agreed combination in the purchase specification and approve a sample using that cartridge. For a remote cylinder connection, include the hose, regulator and supply pressure. Do not accept an adapter or replacement valve without reviewing compatibility and conformity evidence. Our gas camping stove sourcing guide covers duty and the broader buying checklist.
Match conformity evidence to the delivered stove
Before sale in Great Britain, ask the relevant product safety authority to confirm the conformity assessment required for the model and intended gas supply. Request the declaration of conformity, relevant assessment certificates and supporting test reports. Compare the manufacturer, model, burner, valve, connection, fuel and pressure with the approved sample. Follow our gas appliance certification guide for the wider document review.
CE marking remains recognised indefinitely in Great Britain. A logo alone does not establish that the ordered configuration is covered. Ask the assessment body or laboratory to confirm the certificate scope and explain which standards and tests apply to this stove. Identify the destination before approving documents; arrange a separate review for Northern Ireland.
Agree a recorded leak-check procedure
Have a competent tester agree a procedure using the specified fuel supply and the manufacturer's instructions. Include cartridge engagement, seals, valves and any hose joints, with checks after fitting and normal handling. Use suitable leak-detection equipment or fluid as directed by the tester. Never use a flame to search for a leak.
Request records identifying the tested stove, cartridge, method, result and any corrective work. An ignition demonstration is not a leak-test record. Stop testing leaking units and keep affected stock separate pending investigation. Agree production sampling and defect handling in the inspection brief, rather than accepting a supplier-selected demonstration.
Check tent and vehicle restrictions
Using camping stoves inside tents or caravans poses a carbon monoxide poisoning risk. Set an outdoor-use-only acceptance condition for the portable camping stove you are buying: no cooking or heating inside tents, tent porches, cars, campervans or caravans. Do not accept wording suggesting that opening a flap or window makes enclosed use acceptable.
The instructions must be clear, legible and in easily understandable English. Check that the manual, packaging and proposed sales listing consistently explain the outdoor restriction, cartridge fitting and removal, leak response and shut-off procedure. Ask an unfamiliar user to explain the instructions back to you. Our assembly and use instructions guide explains how to review usability.

Set a purchase and shipment gate
Before paying a deposit, resolve the fuel specification, connection compatibility and model coverage. Before shipment, reconcile production samples, labels, instructions and leak-check records with the approved configuration. Hold acceptance if the factory changes a valve, seal, burner or supplied adapter until the effect on safety and certification has been reviewed.
Keep the approved sample, specification, document versions and inspection findings together. Give the factory written acceptance criteria and require buyer approval for substitutions. Cambridge China Bridge can use its own staff in China to compare the supplied configuration and records with your buying brief, coordinating specialist testing where needed.
Frequently asked questions
Will any gas cartridge fit a camping stove?
Do not assume compatibility. Specify the fuel, cartridge valve and connection design, then verify the approved stove with the named cartridge. Review any adapter separately.
Is a CE logo enough for a China-made camping stove?
No. CE marking remains recognised in Great Britain, but check the declaration, relevant certificates and reports against the exact model, fuel and connection being supplied.
How should I check a camping stove for gas leaks?
Ask a competent tester to use the specified supply and an agreed procedure covering seals, valves and connections. Obtain identifiable results. Never use a flame to find leaks.
Can I use a portable gas stove in a tent or campervan?
Keep the portable camping stove outdoors. Specify warnings against use inside tents and vehicles, including campervans. Do not treat an open flap or window as permission for enclosed use.
