How to check a pram or pushchair before use

Assemble the exact model to its instructions with no child present. Check wheel retention, brakes, folding locks, harnesses and every detachable-seat connection. Hold back any item with missing instructions, damage or uncertain compatibility. Factory checks in China can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Identify the model and its permitted configurations

Match the frame, seat, carrycot, adapters and instructions to the actual model delivered. Record the batch identification and photograph the labels. Search the government’s product safety alerts, reports and recalls by brand and model, then compare any notice with the actual batch and configuration. Resolve a possible match before using or releasing stock.

Our baby-product safety guide covers the general product safety route for Great Britain, standards and documentation. This guide adds checks on the assembled product. Obtain the manufacturer’s stated child limits, permitted seating directions, recline settings and accessory combinations. Missing or conflicting information is a reason to hold the item back.

Assemble safely and check the wheels

Keep children away during assembly and remove packaging, loose fittings and transport restraints. Follow the exact model’s instructions in their stated order, using the specified tools and fasteners. Check that the frame is undamaged, fittings are complete and fabric does not obstruct moving parts. Do not improvise with substitute bolts, drilled holes or parts from another model.

Fit wheels and axles as instructed, then check that their retention devices engage and resist a gentle pull without operating the release. Check steering, tyre condition and any specified tyre pressure. Inspect accessible edges, exposed fasteners and damaged seams. Ask the manufacturer to resolve unclear assembly steps before continuing; a supplier’s video should supplement the written instructions.

Check folding locks and the parking brake

With the product empty, unfold it fully and confirm that every folding lock and safety device engages as the instructions describe. Check the backrest lock after unfolding and changing recline. Repeat the permitted folding sequence, keeping fingers clear of hinges. An official Bugaboo Dragonfly notice illustrates why this matters: a particular unfolding sequence could leave the backrest unsecured on affected products.

On a level surface, keep hold of the empty pushchair, apply the parking brake and gently try to move it. Check that the intended braked wheels are restrained, then release the brake and check that they turn freely. Stop if it slips, catches inconsistently or needs unusual force. Do not use a child to test brakes or folding locks, or attempt an improvised slope test.

Inspect harnesses and arrange stability checks

Inspect every harness strap, buckle, adjuster, seam and anchorage for damage, loose stitching or incorrect routing. Fasten the complete harness and check that it stays engaged with a gentle pull and releases by the instructed action. Check that adjustment holds and can achieve the fit described for the intended child. Do not treat a bumper bar as a substitute for the harness.

Check that the assembled frame sits evenly without rocking on a level floor, with no loose joints or visibly bent parts. Ask a competent laboratory to assess loaded stability in the intended seat, recline and accessory configurations. Do not deliberately tip the product or invent test weights. Keep bags off the handle unless the manufacturer expressly permits that use, and follow its basket limits.

Confirm detachable-seat and adapter compatibility

Obtain written compatibility information naming the exact chassis, seat or carrycot and any adapters. Similar sockets or an audible click do not establish compatibility. Fit each permitted combination in its allowed direction, with the brake applied and no child present. Confirm every attachment is fully engaged, then perform the retention check specified in the instructions without operating the release.

Check that adapters are fitted in the correct orientation and that the attachment does not obstruct brakes, folding locks or steering. Do not use an unlisted combination or modify a connector to make it fit. If a car seat is supplied, our car-seat checking guide covers its separate approval and vehicle-fit checks; attachment to a pushchair does not establish suitability for a car.

Record failures and decide whether to release

Record the configuration, photographs, observations and any failed operation against the batch. Segregate affected stock and stop use if a brake slips, a lock fails, a harness anchorage moves or an attachment will not retain securely. Send the evidence to the supplier and request a documented assessment and corrective action. Do not conceal a fault with lubrication, tightening or replacement parts outside the manufacturer’s instructions.

An empty functional check cannot establish structural strength, durability or loaded stability. Our laboratory testing guide explains the separate testing route. Require unresolved safety concerns to be assessed and corrected before release, then repeat the relevant checks. Cambridge China Bridge’s own staff in China can coordinate assembly observations and supplier follow-up against the agreed specification.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check a pushchair brake before use?

On a level surface, hold the empty pushchair, apply the parking brake and gently try to move it. Check release as well. Stop if it slips or engages inconsistently; loaded performance needs competent assessment.

Is a click enough to show the folding lock is secure?

Check every lock and safety device using the model’s instructions, including any engagement indicators. Confirm the backrest after unfolding. A sound alone does not resolve incomplete engagement.

Can I fit a different seat to my pushchair?

Use only a combination confirmed by the manufacturer for the exact chassis, seat and adapters. Matching sockets are insufficient. Check permitted direction, full engagement and the instructed retention check.

Can I test a new pushchair with my child in it?

Keep the child out during assembly and fault checks. Do not use a child as a test load. Resolve missing instructions, damage and uncertain compatibility before use, and arrange competent assessment of loaded safety.
