How to check a bicycle helmet bought from China
Confirm the manufacturer and exact helmet version, verify matching protection documents, then inspect the delivered helmet and check its fit with the strap fastened. Keep unresolved or damaged helmets out of use and obtain replacement instructions. Factory identity and document checks can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Confirm who made the actual helmet
Photograph the delivered helmet’s manufacturer details, model, size, batch identification and markings. Contact the manufacturer through independently found contact details. Ask whether it recognises the helmet and whether the seller is authorised. A CE or UKCA mark, familiar logo or seller’s photograph cannot authenticate the helmet in your parcel.
Ask whether the supplied China-market version matches the documented version, including its shell, impact liner, straps and buckle. Keep unexplained differences out of use. Our cycle helmet sourcing guide covers the wider purchasing brief; this guide focuses on checking a helmet for yourself or your child.
Match protection evidence to the supplied version
Request the declaration of conformity, applicable type-examination certificate and supporting test reports for the exact model and size supplied. Ask which evidence addresses impact absorption, strap strength, resistance to coming off and the wearer’s field of vision. Compare the documented samples with the helmet’s construction. A report for a similar-looking helmet leaves the match unresolved.
Ask the issuing body to confirm document authenticity and the models, sizes and configurations covered, using independently found contact details. Our test report verification guide explains the document checks. OPSS has recalled a children’s bicycle helmet because its impact absorption was insufficient. Check official recall notices against the manufacturer, model and batch before use.
Check fit and retention on the wearer
The Highway Code recommends a cycle helmet that conforms to current regulations, is the correct size and is securely fastened. Measure the wearer’s head using the manufacturer’s guidance, then try the delivered helmet. It should sit level, cover the forehead and feel snug without painful pressure or obstructing vision. Do not buy an oversized helmet for a child to grow into.
Adjust the cradle and straps exactly as instructed, keeping straps flat and fastening the buckle. Gently turn and tilt the head and check whether the helmet shifts or rolls away from its position. Ask an experienced cycle retailer to check uncertain fit. Reject a helmet that cannot stay secure comfortably; do not cut the liner or improvise padding. Recheck a child’s fit as they grow.
Inspect the helmet after transport
Photograph the packaging and helmet during unpacking. Examine the shell, visible impact liner, strap anchors, stitching, adjustment mechanism and buckle. Look for cracks, crushed foam, separation, distorted parts, fraying and signs of previous use. Do not remove bonded components to inspect underneath. An intact carton or smooth outer shell does not establish that the helmet is sound.
Keep a suspect helmet out of use and send photographs and its identification details to the manufacturer and seller. Retain the packaging while the issue is resolved. Our transit damage guide covers notices and claim evidence. Avoid home drop tests or forceful strap tests: these cannot establish protection and may damage the helmet.

Obtain care and replacement instructions
Obtain understandable English instructions for the exact model, covering fitting, cleaning, storage, approved accessories and replacement. Replace a helmet that has taken a crash impact, even if damage is not visible. For a dropped helmet or suspected transport impact, stop using it and seek the manufacturer’s advice. Follow its ageing and replacement guidance rather than inventing a universal replacement interval.
Do not glue cracks, reshape foam or fit an unapproved buckle. Agree how a suspect helmet will be returned or disposed of, and check any replacement’s identity, condition and fit again. Cambridge China Bridge’s staff in China can coordinate factory documents and packing checks; the delivered helmet still needs checks on the wearer. Use our bicycle checks guide for the bicycle itself.
Frequently asked questions
Does a CE or UKCA mark prove my bicycle helmet is genuine?
The mark alone cannot authenticate your helmet. Ask the manufacturer to confirm its identity and match its model, size and construction to genuine conformity documents.
Can I buy a larger bicycle helmet for my child to grow into?
Choose a helmet that fits securely now. Reject one that shifts or rolls away after correct adjustment, and recheck fit as your child grows.
Can I use a helmet delivered in a crushed box?
Keep it out of use while checking for damage and obtaining the manufacturer’s advice. Photograph the packaging, liner, shell and retention parts, and contact the seller.
Should I replace a bicycle helmet after a crash?
Replace it if it took an impact, even without visible damage. Follow the manufacturer’s replacement instructions and ask about any replacement arrangement before disposing of it.
