Getting started

Buying a vehicle recovery winch from China

Before buying, obtain installer acceptance of the mounting, pulling data for the intended recovery conditions, and a matched rope and connector specification. Arrange practical training and keep a recovery-only winch out of lifting duties. Ask Cambridge China Bridge to check the factory and supplied kit against that brief.

Obtain acceptance of the complete mounting

Send your installer the vehicle details, loaded condition, winch drawing, mounting plate, fasteners and intended recovery use. Ask for written acceptance of the load path into the vehicle structure, permitted pulling directions and installation checks. Include the fairlead position, bumper clearance, added weight and access to controls. A matching bolt pattern alone does not establish suitability.

For approval, registration and insurer checks, use our vehicle modification guide. Ask the installer to specify the battery supply, cables, circuit protection and isolation arrangement. Make acceptance of the complete installation a purchase condition before the factory builds or ships your kit.

Check usable pulling capacity

Request a pulling-performance chart stating the rope layer on the drum, supply conditions, line speed, current draw and permitted operating and cooling periods. Ask whether the advertised capacity is measured at the innermost rope layer. Pulling capability changes as rope builds up on the drum; a headline rating does not describe every recovery.

Have a recovery specialist assess your loaded vehicle, slopes, rolling resistance, mud suction and proposed rigging. Ask the factory for a controlled test report matching the ordered motor, gearbox, drum and rope. Use our test-report verification guide. Do not substitute vehicle weight or a generic buying multiplier for an assessment of the intended pull.

Specify the rope and every connector together

Record the rope material, diameter, length, termination, drum attachment and minimum retained wraps specified by the manufacturer. Obtain written confirmation that the rope suits the drum, brake heat and fairlead. Changing from steel to synthetic rope needs a compatibility review, including surfaces that could cut or abrade the replacement.

Match hooks, shackles, soft connectors, straps, pulleys or recovery rings to the rope and approved recovery points. Request ratings and permitted loading directions for each component, including any limits imposed by bends or side loading. Have the specialist review the complete rigging arrangement. Keep breaking strength distinct from the permitted working rating, and reject unmarked connectors or unspecified substitutions.

Arrange practical recovery training

Book hands-on training for the intended vehicle and kit before independent use. Ask the trainer to cover anchor selection, rigging forces, communications, exclusion areas, controlled spooling, stopping and recovery abandonment. Include gloves appropriate to the rope and methods that keep hands clear of the fairlead. Practise under supervision in a controlled setting.

Agree pre-use checks and replacement criteria for rope damage, corrosion, loose mounts, damaged connectors and control faults. Avoid shock loading, stepping over a tensioned rope or attaching to an unverified towing point. Ask the site operator about access and recovery restrictions. Treat roadside recovery as a separate situation requiring appropriate expertise.

Keep recovery separate from lifting

Specify vehicle pulling as the intended use. For a recovery-only winch, prohibit lifting people, suspending loads or using the rope as the sole support while someone works beneath a vehicle. Ask for these limits in the manual and on the product. A pulling rating and a holding brake do not establish suitability as a hoist.

HSE states that lifting-equipment regulations apply only to lifting equipment used at work. If your planned activity includes work, obtain a separate assessment rather than assuming recreational use covers it. HSE also requires manufacturers of machinery intended to lift people to identify that purpose through markings and instructions. Such markings alone do not establish that a recovery kit is suitable for lifting people.

Make the specification a shipment gate

Before ordering, request the exact model identity, conformity declaration, marking photographs, English installation and operating instructions, performance evidence and spare-parts details for review. Use our supplier verification guide for the supplier checks. Require written approval before changing the motor, rope, brake, controller or supplied connectors.

Agree inspection of the production kit against the accepted specification, including model labels, rope terminations, accessories, packing and control functions. Arrange any loaded testing with a competent specialist using an agreed safe procedure. Cambridge China Bridge has its own staff in China to check the factory and goods against your brief; arrange mounting acceptance and recovery training with the relevant specialists.

Frequently asked questions

What size winch do I need for my vehicle?

Ask a recovery specialist to assess the loaded vehicle, terrain and rigging. Obtain pulling data by drum layer and stated supply conditions. Vehicle weight alone does not establish the required pulling capacity.

Can I fit a Chinese winch to any bumper?

Obtain installer acceptance of the mounting plate, fasteners and load path into the vehicle structure. Matching bolt holes do not establish that a bumper can withstand recovery forces.

Can I replace steel winch rope with synthetic rope?

Only proceed after the manufacturer confirms compatibility with the drum, brake heat, fairlead and termination. Check for damaged surfaces and specify compatible connectors and replacement criteria.

Can a recovery winch lift people or heavy loads?

Keep a recovery-only winch out of lifting duties. Its pulling rating does not establish a safe lifting capacity. Use equipment specifically assessed for the proposed lift and obtain specialist advice.
