Start with the import-licence question

Before paying a Chinese factory, send your own customs broker the product description, materials, intended use and photographs. Ask whether an import licence applies to the proposed goods. The External Trade Act says applications for licences under that Act must be made as the Comptroller of Customs directs.

Get a written checklist covering the applicant, supporting documents and any product certification or labelling to investigate. Ask your broker to resolve these questions before you approve production. Give us that checklist so supplier selection and document preparation follow the route established locally.

Agree a price to your own destination port

Cambridge China Bridge is a UK-based sourcing company with its own staff in China. Send us your specification, quantity, packing needs and destination port in Antigua and Barbuda. Ask the quotation to identify the delivery term, freight, insurance arrangements and destination charges payable separately.

Our overseas buying guide explains the wider service, and buying through a UK company explains the purchasing arrangement. If you also supply other markets, use the Colombia guide and Mexico guide for those destinations, with a separate broker checklist for each.

Prepare the factory and shipment documents

We coordinate the commercial invoice and packing list with the factory and the agreed selling arrangement. The factory supplies product details, packing quantities, weights and dimensions; we reconcile these with the order. Have your broker review the proposed seller, importer, descriptions, values and delivery term before the documents are finalised.

Where your broker requests a certificate of origin, we arrange it with the exporter. We obtain relevant factory test reports or coordinate agreed testing. Ask the broker to confirm the acceptable issuer and scope before commissioning certificates. Match reports to the actual model and materials, and submit proposed labels for review before printing.

Check the supplier before inspecting the goods

Our staff in China check the supplier's identity, production location and capability against your brief. We establish which site will make the goods, review relevant equipment and processes, and ask about subcontracting. Agree the evidence you want to see, including site photographs, sample findings and unresolved questions.

Before shipment, we inspect the finished order against the approved sample and written specification. Agree checks for function, finish, quantities, packaging and labels. Record defects, corrective work and your shipment-release decision. Keep the inspection report and laboratory evidence separate so you can see what each check actually establishes.

Your own broker manages the arrival

Customs states that every commercial importation must be accounted for on a customs declaration. Appoint your own broker to confirm the final entry, classification and valuation, prepare the declaration, calculate destination duties and taxes, and coordinate examination and release.

Before booking freight, send the broker the completed invoice, packing list and requested product evidence; arrange delivery of the carrier's transport document when available. Ask for confirmation of outstanding paperwork and budget separately for port handling, storage and onward delivery. We coordinate the China-side work against that agreed handover.
