Importing from China to Colombia: RUT registration

Start with your Colombian importer registration: MINCIT says it must specify import activity. Ask your own customs broker to confirm the product requirements and final entry before shipment. For sourcing, document coordination and a quote to your Colombian port, work with Cambridge China Bridge.

Start with registration that specifies importing

Colombia's Ministry of Commerce says that, to undertake import activities, registration must specify that activity. This instruction appears in its importer-registration guidance concerning the RUT, Colombia's tax register. Before committing to a Chinese factory, ask your Colombian customs broker to check your registration and confirm who will be named as importer.

Send the broker the product description, intended use, materials and model details at the same time. Ask for a written checklist covering any import licence, product registration, conformity evidence or labelling that applies. Settle what the factory must provide before approving production or shipment.

Agree a quote to your Colombian port

Tell us your destination port, product specification, quantity and packing requirements. We can quote to your own Colombian port. Ask the quotation to identify the delivery term, freight, insurance arrangements and which destination charges remain for you. A port quotation needs an agreed boundary before you compare it with another supplier's price.

Our overseas buying guide explains the wider service, while buying through a UK company helps you frame the purchasing arrangement. If you also buy for Peru, use the Peru guide for that destination and obtain a separate Colombian checklist.

Agree the documents before the goods leave China

We coordinate the commercial invoice and packing list with the factory and the agreed selling arrangement. Have your broker review draft documents for the seller, Colombian importer, product descriptions, quantities, values and delivery term. Reconcile carton counts and weights with the packing list before dispatch.

Where your broker requests a certificate of origin, we arrange it with the exporter. For test reports, we obtain the factory's existing evidence or coordinate agreed testing. Ask the broker to confirm the acceptable issuer and scope. Match reports to the actual model, materials and configuration; settle label artwork before printing.

Check the supplier and the shipment separately

Our staff in China check the supplier's identity, production site and capability against your specification. We establish where your goods will be made, review relevant equipment and processes, and ask about subcontracting. Use the audit and inspection report guide to agree what evidence each check should leave.

Before shipment, we inspect the finished order against the approved sample and written specification, including agreed checks of function, finish, packaging, labels and quantities. Record defects, corrections and your release decision. A batch inspection does not establish laboratory conformity or Colombian import approval.

Your Colombian broker handles the arrival

Agree with your own broker that they will confirm the final entry, classification and valuation, prepare the declaration, calculate local duties and taxes, and coordinate clearance and release. Give them the invoice, packing list, carrier's transport document and the product evidence they requested. Ask them to flag any filing needed before arrival.

Before we book shipment, have the broker review the completed document pack and identify anything outstanding. Keep local port handling, storage and onward delivery visible in your budget. Send Cambridge China Bridge the product brief, Colombian port and broker's checklist so the China work follows the requirements established at your end.
