Buying baby slings and carriers from China

Before ordering, match safety evidence to the exact sling or carrier, check its child and wearer fit, examine load-bearing fastenings and review airway positioning instructions. Arrange competent fitting advice before use. Factory checks in China can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Define the carrier and its evidence

Describe the construction: fabric wrap, ring sling, buckle carrier, framed carrier or hip seat. Specify every intended carrying position, accessory and child suitability claim. Our baby-product safety guide covers the general safety route and labels; this guide adds checks specific to carrying a child.

Ask the laboratory to confirm which standard and edition cover that construction and use. Match the evidence to the panel dimensions, fabric stretch, stitching, rings, buckles, webbing and inserts you will buy. Ask which carrying positions and configurations were assessed. Use our test-report verification guide to check the report with its issuer.

Check child and wearer fit separately

Request written suitability limits covering the child's size, weight, development and head control, plus any position-specific restrictions. Ask how the panel, seat and head support adjust as the child grows. Do not accept a broad age claim as proof that a particular child fits, or assume an optional insert makes every position suitable.

Check the wearer's waist and shoulder adjustment range, ability to reach fastenings and comfort with the intended load. Have a competent fitting adviser assess the actual model with the intended child and wearer before use. Where premature birth, low birth weight or a health condition raises concerns, seek advice from the child's healthcare professional.

Inspect the whole fastening load path

Trace how the child's weight passes through the fabric, seams, straps and fastenings. Check buckle engagement, webbing threading, strap retention, ring condition and stitching at attachment points. Ask the laboratory to assess slippage, repeated loading and foreseeable incorrect fastening. Agree tests and acceptance criteria before production; do not improvise a load test using a child.

A government recall for an Oscha carrier identified a fault at the shoulder strap attachment. Include these attachment points in the production inspection, rather than checking only whether buckles close. Record fraying, loose stitching, damaged components and adjustments that creep. Our inspection guide explains how to brief checks on the shipment.

Make airway positioning clear

A government safety report identified a serious suffocation risk in a Landici hip-seat carrier. Review whether your instructions help the wearer keep the child supported upright, close enough to kiss, with the face visible and nose and mouth clear of fabric and clothing. Keep the chin away from the chest and check position and breathing throughout use.

Check photographs and demonstrations against the written instructions. Do not show a child slumped inside the carrier or promote hands-free feeding. Take the child out before feeding, and do not sleep while wearing the carrier. Ask the fitting adviser to demonstrate how to recognise and correct an unsafe position.

Arrange fitting advice before release

Ask a sling library or babywearing consultant about their training, experience with this carrier type and ability to assess the actual child and wearer. Bring the model and its instructions. Request a demonstration of putting it on, adjusting it, checking fastenings and removing the child safely, followed by the wearer practising under supervision.

For a resale order, arrange competent review of the English instructions and customer fitting support before approving stock. Keep the reviewed sample, instructions and production specification together. Resolve differences before shipment. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can check production against the agreed specification; individual fitting advice needs an appropriate adviser.

Frequently asked questions

Is a factory certificate enough for a baby carrier?

Ask for the full report covering your exact construction, components, accessories and carrying positions. Verify it with the issuer and resolve differences before ordering.

How do I know whether a carrier fits a newborn?

Check the model's suitability limits, head support and permitted positions. Arrange a competent assessment with the actual child and wearer; an age label alone does not establish fit.

What fastenings should I check on a baby sling?

Check rings or buckles, webbing threading and retention, seams and strap attachments. Ask for laboratory assessment of slippage and strength; visual checks alone cannot establish safety.

Where can I get help fitting a baby carrier?

Ask a sling library or babywearing consultant about relevant training and model experience. Take the carrier and instructions, and practise fitting it with supervised feedback.
