Getting started

Small quantities from China for UK gift box buyers

Buying a handful of each item can work through ready-stock sellers, provided they accept your quantities and have suitable stock. Factory production is often unsuitable at this scale. Compare the complete delivered cost per usable item with UK wholesale alternatives before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate seller checks and consolidation through its own staff in China.

Start with ready stock, rather than a production brief

Look for wholesalers, stockists or traders offering existing products in the colours and packaging you need. Confirm the quantity accepted per design and variant, whether packs can be split, and whether the goods are physically available. A listing labelled as stock may still require production. Ask for photographs of the actual batch and approval before any substitution.

Many factories cannot justify a handful of units because machine changeovers, material batches and packaging preparation cost more than the run earns. Existing stock avoids much of that production work, although your choice may be limited and repeat availability uncertain. Our MOQ and sampling guide explains production minimums; buying from 1688 without an account covers access to sellers.

Ask how the packed shipment will be charged

For courier or air freight, chargeable weight commonly compares actual gross weight with a weight derived from carton dimensions, using the carrier's method. Light ribbon, empty gift boxes and padded ornaments can occupy substantial space; dense accessories add actual weight. Ask which basis applies to your shipment and request packed measurements rather than relying on product weights.

Mixed goods do not automatically pack efficiently. Fragile items need protection, bottles need separation, and retail boxes can leave gaps. Ask the warehouse to propose packing that reduces empty space without damaging presentation or removing labels. Obtain the final gross weight and carton dimensions, then have the forwarder explain the chargeable basis and any route-specific handling.

Test whether each item earns its place

Build a worksheet for each item: purchase cost, seller-to-warehouse delivery, receiving and checking, repacking, its share of international freight, clearance and UK delivery, plus applicable duty, import VAT and product checks. Divide the total by the quantity you expect to use or sell, rather than the quantity ordered. Compare with a UK wholesale offer for an equivalent item and delivery scope.

Handling and shipping can exceed the goods cost when inexpensive items need separate seller collections, bulky protection or extensive checking. That does not automatically make the order uneconomic: compare the delivered item cost with what your gift box can support after packaging, assembly and selling costs. If the remaining margin is inadequate, source that component locally or remove it.

Ask for the shipment quote with and without a bulky or awkward item. This shows the cost it adds more clearly than spreading freight equally across every piece. Allocate shared costs consistently and keep them visible even when removing an item leaves the freight quote unchanged. Our small-orders service can scope the trial around your shortlist.

Combine sellers through a shared China warehouse

Give every seller the same warehouse address and an order reference identifying the item and variant. Agree receiving counts, photographs, visible-damage checks and the handling of shortages. Keep seller records attached to each line after repacking. Use consolidation to arrange a combined UK delivery once the accepted goods are ready. For purchase records, see our guide to Chinese tax invoices.

Agree what happens if a seller is late, an item is rejected or the carrier will not accept a component. Confirm storage, repacking, release authority, clearance and delivery inclusions before dispatch. Consolidation can reduce repeated shipping work, but it does not guarantee a saving. For branded packing and assembly instructions, use our gift-set assembly guide.

Screen toys, cosmetics and chocolate before buying

For children's toys sold in Great Britain, check conformity assessment, the appropriate UKCA or CE marking, the declaration of conformity, technical documentation, instructions and warnings. Match the evidence to the actual product supplied. A mark on a listing is insufficient for your buying checks. Our toys and gifts guide explains classification and importer responsibilities.

Cosmetics made available in Great Britain need a Responsible Person with a UK established address. Confirm with the relevant authority the cosmetic safety report and notification requirements before sale, using our gift-set assembly guide to prepare your questions. Ask who holds the documents for the exact formula and packaging. For Northern Ireland delivery, obtain separate destination-specific checks.

The official confectionery guidance states that confectionery from China containing milk is not permitted. Exclude milk-containing chocolate from this sourcing brief. For other chocolate, have a food-import specialist check ingredients, processing, origin and the applicable import route before warehouse acceptance. Exempt composite products still require an exporter’s commercial document. Consider buying chocolate from a UK wholesaler. Take legal questions about your obligations to a solicitor.

Send a shortlist that can be quoted

Send product links or photographs, quantities by variant, acceptable materials, packaging needs, intended customer use and your UK delivery postcode. State whether you will assemble the gift boxes in the UK or want warehouse assembly quoted separately. Include any required shelf-life information and the compliance evidence already available. For personal gift artwork, see our guide to printing football crests or characters.

Ask Cambridge China Bridge to identify stock availability, seller pack restrictions, receiving checks and the complete delivery scope through its own staff in China. Approve the assortment only after reviewing packed dimensions, item-level economics and unresolved compliance flags. Keep alternatives ready for components that fail the cost or documentation checks. If the order will repeat every month, our monthly kit and subscription box programmes service covers assembly in China and one bulk delivery to a single UK address.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy just a few of each gift-box item from China?

Potentially, through ready-stock sellers that accept your quantities. Confirm pack sizes, variants and actual availability. Bespoke factory production is often unsuitable for a handful of units.

Why does shipping cost more than the items?

Bulky packaging, separate seller deliveries, warehouse handling and fragile-item protection can outweigh inexpensive goods. Compare the complete delivered cost per usable item with UK wholesale alternatives.

Can different Chinese sellers send my goods together?

They can deliver to a shared warehouse for receiving checks and consolidation, subject to acceptance. Agree shortage handling, packing and release instructions before arranging the combined UK delivery.

Can I import milk chocolate from China for gift boxes?

Source that component in the UK, and obtain specialist checks before importing other chocolate.
