Can I use a China appliance with a UK plug adaptor?
No. A plug adaptor changes the connection shape, not the appliance's voltage or frequency rating. Before connecting it, check supply compatibility, earthing, load limits and the manufacturer's instructions. Cambridge China Bridge can ask the factory for evidence for the exact model.

Start with the appliance, not the adaptor
Keep the appliance unplugged while you gather clear photographs of its rating plate, original plug, cable and any separate power supply. Ask for the manual for the exact model. A seller saying that an adaptor is included does not establish that the appliance is suitable for your home.
This guide covers checks before connection. If you are buying stock to supply to customers, use our electrical import rules guide for the wider importer duties. Making a plug fit does not resolve those duties.
Check voltage and frequency separately
The nominal domestic mains supply in Great Britain is 230 volts at 50 hertz. Compare both with the appliance's stated input ratings. For an appliance with a separate power supply, check that supply's mains input, not just its output. Do not assume a China-market model is compatible because a similar export model is.
If the label states a voltage without an operating range, ask the manufacturer to confirm suitability for the intended UK supply, including normal supply variation. If frequency is missing or incompatible, keep it unplugged pending advice. A plug adaptor changes neither voltage nor frequency; an ordinary voltage transformer does not resolve a frequency mismatch.
Preserve the earth connection
Earthed equipment depends on a protective earth connection. Double-insulated equipment does not need an earth connection to maintain safety. Ask the manufacturer to identify which construction the exact appliance uses; do not infer this from the casing material or plug shape alone.
Where an earth is needed, the complete connection through the cable, plug and adaptor must preserve it. A socket accepting the original plug is not proof of earth continuity. Do not remove an earth pin or use an arrangement that bypasses it. If the protection type or earth path is uncertain, have a competent electrical professional assess it before connection.
Check adaptor limits and conversion plugs
Compare the appliance's power or current demand with the adaptor's stated limit and intended use. For heaters, cooking appliances and equipment with motors, ask about continuous operation and starting demand. Avoid stacked adaptors, loose contacts and unsupported heavy plugs. A higher-rated adaptor cannot correct an unsuitable appliance voltage or frequency rating.
For domestic equipment intended for UK mains use, ask Trading Standards to confirm the applicable plug requirements, using our appliance plug guide to prepare your questions. A compatible approved conversion plug is distinct from a loose travel adaptor. Ask for evidence of approval for the original plug, secure enclosure, removal using a tool and the correct fuse. Neither arrangement changes the appliance's electrical ratings.

Know when to obtain professional advice
Obtain advice before connecting equipment with unclear ratings, uncertain earthing, damaged cables, signs of overheating or a proposed transformer arrangement. For fixed wiring or uncertainty about the home circuit, consult a competent electrician. For appliance compatibility, consult the manufacturer or an appliance specialist. Give them the photographs, manual and intended use, rather than asking only whether the plug fits.
Ask for a clear conclusion identifying the exact model, permitted supply and connection arrangement, and any necessary work. Request supporting reports using our test report verification guide. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can obtain factory documents and clarify the specification; a remote document check cannot establish the condition of your appliance or home wiring.
Frequently asked questions
Does a UK plug adaptor convert voltage?
No. A plug adaptor changes the physical connection. Check the appliance's input voltage and frequency separately, and obtain manufacturer confirmation if its suitability is unclear.
Can I use an unearthed adaptor for a Chinese appliance?
Only consider it where the appliance's protection does not require an earth. Never bypass an earth needed by the appliance. If its construction or the earth path is unclear, keep it unplugged pending a competent check.
Is a conversion plug the same as a travel adaptor?
Ask Trading Standards to confirm the applicable UK supply requirements. Ask for a compatible approved conversion plug and evidence covering the original plug, secure fitting and fuse. Confirm whether a loose travel adaptor is acceptable for the intended arrangement.
Should I buy a transformer for a China-market appliance?
Ask the manufacturer or an appliance specialist first. They need to assess voltage, frequency, load, starting demand and earthing. A transformer is not automatic evidence that the complete arrangement is safe.
