Buying a powered adjustable bed from China
Approve the complete bed, mattress and accessory combination before ordering. Ask for evidence of safe movement, a demonstrated power-failure procedure, clearly defined load limits and a named UK installer or service provider. Arrange factory checks through Cambridge China Bridge.

Define the intended use before choosing the model
Tell the supplier whether the bed is for ordinary domestic use or for someone needing care, assisted transfers or pressure management. Record the intended users, setting and accessories. Ask a product compliance specialist to review that intended use and the exact configuration before approving the evidence package. Our certification guide covers the broader document checks.
Approve the mattress with the moving base
Obtain the bed manufacturer's written mattress specification, including dimensions, thickness, weight, flexibility and any construction restrictions. Ask for confirmation covering your exact mattress model, topper and retaining fittings. A mattress fitting the flat base does not demonstrate compatibility throughout movement. Use our mattress fit guide for the underlying measurement brief.
Have the supplier demonstrate the complete combination through its permitted positions. Check for bridging, bunching, sliding and lifting away from retainers. Mattress-edge compression can contribute to entrapment around rails. If rails or grab handles are proposed, review them with the intended occupant and a competent assessor; our bed rail compatibility guide covers that separate purchase.
Inspect the mechanism throughout its travel
HSE's care-home guidance identifies the risk of residents and visitors becoming trapped in moving parts of electric profiling beds. Ask the supplier to identify trapping points beneath the platform, around linkages and between moving sections, the frame and nearby furniture. Include access by children, pets and carers in your purchasing assessment.
Request a competent safety assessment of guards, clearances, control behaviour and any obstruction protection claimed by the supplier. Agree a controlled demonstration using suitable test equipment, never hands or a person as an obstruction. Check cable routing throughout travel and ask how unintended operation is prevented. A smooth-running video alone is insufficient evidence.
Demonstrate what happens when power fails
Ask what happens if mains power fails while the bed is raised or articulated. Distinguish battery-powered movement, emergency flattening and lowering the whole platform: ask exactly which functions remain available. Request the manufacturer's written procedure and a demonstration under its permitted loading conditions, without an occupant during procurement checks.
Check who can perform the procedure, where the release or backup supply is located and whether tools or assistance are needed. Ask about depleted batteries, control failure and actuator failure separately. Confirm how to isolate every power source before servicing. Agree an occupant assistance plan if movement cannot be restored; do not improvise a release under load.
Clarify every load rating
Ask the manufacturer to distinguish maximum occupant weight from safe working load and to state exactly what each includes. Confirm how the mattress, bedding and accessories count towards the limit. Obtain separate explanations for lifting, holding a position and sitting on an edge. Do not infer the bed's capacity from an actuator label or an evenly distributed demonstration load.
Match the rating to the intended occupancy and transfer arrangements, including foreseeable assistance at the bedside. Request test reports identifying the complete bed configuration, loading method and assessed functions. Put agreed limits and operating restrictions into the purchase specification and English instructions. Ask the supplier to resolve inconsistent ratings before approving production.

Secure UK installation and servicing before shipment
Have a named UK installer accept the exact model before purchase. Send the assembly instructions, component weights, access dimensions, power requirements and service information. Agree who checks assembly, clearances, mattress compatibility, movement and emergency operation at handover. Our UK service partner guide helps structure the support agreement.
Confirm service coverage at the delivery postcode, call-out charges, warranty labour, spare-part availability and responsibility for an unusable bed. Ask for identifiable actuators, controllers, handsets and backup batteries, with replacement instructions and settings. Make acceptance conditional on the agreed factory demonstration, matching documents and a recorded installation handover. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can coordinate the factory checks.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my existing mattress on an adjustable bed?
Ask the bed manufacturer to approve the exact mattress, topper and retainers in writing. Check flexibility and behaviour through movement, alongside dimensions and weight.
Will an adjustable bed lower during a power cut?
Ask which functions the backup or manual release supports. Emergency flattening may differ from lowering the platform. Request a demonstration and written instructions for the exact model.
Does safe working load mean the user's weight?
Ask what the rating includes. Obtain separate occupant and total-load limits, accounting for the mattress and accessories, plus restrictions during movement and edge sitting.
Who will repair a China-made adjustable bed in the UK?
Secure a named service provider before ordering. Confirm postcode coverage, access to parts and technical information, call-out charges and who pays for warranty labour.
