Getting started

Buying a portable electric heater from China

Before ordering, match the safety reports to the exact heater and its components, verify tip-over and overheating protection, and check the fitted UK plug. Confirm that a suitable wall socket is within reach of a safe position. Ask for these checks through Cambridge China Bridge.

Match the safety evidence to the heater

Ask for the complete safety report, declaration of conformity, rating-plate photograph and English manual for the configuration being quoted. Match the model, power rating, housing, heating element, fan, controls and protective devices to the report photographs and component list. A shared casing or similar model name does not establish coverage. Our test report verification guide explains how to check the issuing laboratory and report.

Ask the laboratory to confirm whether the report covers the proposed UK version, including its cable, plug and any changed controls. Put unresolved differences on hold before ordering. CE or UKCA marking alone does not show that the quoted configuration was tested. Our electrical imports guide covers the wider compliance documents and importer duties.

Specify and verify the protective devices

Specify tip-over shut-off and overheating protection in the purchase specification. Ask which components provide each function, what makes them operate, and whether heating resumes automatically after the heater is upright or has cooled. Treat room-temperature control and emergency overheating protection as separate checks. Ask for evidence of how the protective circuit behaves if the normal thermostat fails.

Have a competent laboratory assess abnormal operation, including blocked airflow and fan failure where relevant, using a controlled test procedure. Do not test this by covering a heater in your room. For production inspection, agree safe functional checks of the tip-over device and compare the fitted protective components with the approved report. A factory demonstration supports inspection but does not replace the safety report.

Check the plug and the actual room socket

Compare the heater's rated voltage, frequency and maximum input with the intended supply. Check the plug, fuse and cable against the approved specification, rather than accepting a loose travel adaptor as a solution. Our appliance plug guide covers the plug evidence and inspection checks.

Plan to plug the heater directly into a sound wall socket. Government guidance for small non-domestic premises recommends avoiding extension cables and adaptors wherever possible. Ask an electrician to assess a loose, scorched or damaged socket, uncertain circuit capacity, or proposed use alongside other heavy loads. A plug that fits does not establish that the socket or circuit is suitable.

Confirm a safe position before choosing the model

Obtain the model's clearance and positioning instructions before ordering, then check whether the room can accommodate them. Choose a firm, level surface permitted by the manual, away from doorways and places where people or pets could knock the heater over. The supplied lead should reach the wall socket without stretching, crossing a walkway or running beneath a rug.

Keep the heater clear of curtains, furniture, bedding and stored materials. Government fire guidance says to keep portable heaters clear of curtains and furniture and never use them to dry clothes. Keep air inlets and outlets unobstructed. Switch off and unplug when leaving the room or going to bed. For a bathroom or damp space, pause the purchase until suitability for that location is confirmed.

Make these checks part of order approval

Keep an approval pack containing the agreed model, report references, component list, plug specification, manual and inspection results. Require written review of changes to the heating element, fan, protective devices, housing or cable before accepting production. Stop acceptance if identification does not match, a safety device fails, or the plug or cable shows damage.

Use our heater sourcing guide for the separate tariff and efficiency checks. Send Cambridge China Bridge the supplier's documents, intended room use and socket information so our staff in China can compare the proposed heater and production units with your agreed specification.

Frequently asked questions

Is a CE certificate enough for a portable heater?

No. Ask for the complete safety report and declaration for the exact configuration. Match the model, components, rating plate and manual to the heater being supplied.

How do I check a heater's tip-over protection?

Specify it in the order and agree a safe functional check by a competent inspector. Record whether heating stops and how it restarts. Do not rely solely on a switch photograph or factory video.

Can I plug a portable heater into an extension lead?

Plan for direct connection to a suitable wall socket. If the lead cannot reach a safe position, change the layout or seek an electrician's advice before buying.

Where should I put a portable electric heater?

Follow the model's clearances on a firm, level surface permitted by its manual. Keep it away from fabrics and walkways, leave vents clear, and switch off and unplug when leaving or going to bed.
