How to check an air purifier bought from China
Ask for independent tests on the finished purifier with its specified filter, then match clean-air delivery and noise to your room and intended fan speed. Check ozone emissions and prove that matching replacement filters can be ordered. Factory checks and specialist testing can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Ask for evidence on the finished purifier
Define the problem first: airborne dust, pollen, smoke particles or a named gas. Do not extend a particle-removal result to odours, gases or infection prevention. Our filtration sourcing guide covers wider sourcing and import questions; this guide focuses on whether the home purifier you receive supports its performance claims.
Ask for an independent whole-unit report identifying the model, fitted filter, fan setting, enabled features, test method and tested pollutant. A HEPA filter-media certificate alone does not establish finished-unit performance. Ask how the filter frame, seals and housing prevent air bypassing the media. Match report photographs and filter identifiers to the sample, then use our test report guide to verify the document with the laboratory.
Translate room-size claims into usable performance
Ask for the measured clean air delivery rate, the pollutant it represents and the fan speed used. This describes particle-cleaning capacity rather than simply the volume of air moved by the fan. Request the calculation behind the advertised room area, including assumed ceiling height and equivalent clean-air changes per hour. Calculate your room volume from its floor area and height, then ask the supplier to explain how the tested output suits it.
Request clean-air delivery and noise results at the setting you expect to use, especially for a bedroom. Do not assume maximum-speed results also apply to sleep mode. Government research notes that controlled chamber tests do not reflect the variability of occupied rooms. Check placement instructions, unobstructed airflow and adjoining spaces. Keep ventilation in use: an air purifier does not replace it.
Identify ozone-producing features before home use
Ask the factory to identify ionisation, plasma, electrostatic collection, ultraviolet lamps and any deliberate ozone generation. Request independent ozone-emission results for the finished model with those features enabled, including automatic operation. Do not accept an 'ozone-free' label or a reassuring smell as evidence. Prefer a design that avoids deliberate ozone release into occupied rooms.
If an electronic treatment feature can be switched off, ask whether it stays off after power loss, restart and mode changes. Obtain filtration-performance evidence with it disabled if that is how you intend to run the purifier. Use our UV and ozone cleaner guide for exposure controls and specialist assessment before testing such features at home.
Prove replacement filters are correctly specified
Request a filter specification covering the part identifier, compatible appliance revisions, dimensions, sealing arrangement, media grade and airflow resistance. Where gas removal is claimed, record the adsorbent material and quantity and request evidence for the named gas. A cartridge that fits the opening is not enough: ask for evidence that the replacement preserves the whole-unit performance you approved.
Place a trial replacement-filter order before approving the appliance. Compare it with the tested filter and check seating, seals, packaging and traceable identification. Agree who supplies replacements, how you order them, expected availability and what happens if the filter is discontinued. Obtain written cleaning and replacement instructions, including whether the reminder measures filter condition or simply elapsed running time.

Make the evidence part of your purchase approval
Record the approved appliance model, filter specification, operating modes and supporting reports in the order. Require review before changes to the fan, filter, seals or electronic treatment features. Use our electrical imports guide for the separate compliance checks. Keep electrical safety, particle removal, gas removal and ozone emissions as separate approval questions.
Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can compare factory samples and replacement filters with the agreed specification and coordinate specialist testing. Factory inspection can check identity, assembly and operation; it does not establish laboratory filtration or emission results. Hold approval where the whole-unit report, room-size explanation or replacement-filter supply cannot be verified.
Frequently asked questions
Does a HEPA label prove an air purifier works?
A filter-media label alone does not prove whole-unit performance. Ask for a finished-unit report with the specified filter fitted, and check the housing and seals for air bypass.
How do I check an air purifier's room-size claim?
Ask for measured clean-air delivery at your intended fan speed and the room-area calculation, including ceiling height and assumed clean-air changes. Check noise at the same setting.
Can I use an ionising air purifier at home?
Request independent ozone-emission evidence for the finished model. If you plan to disable ionisation, check that it stays off after restart and obtain filtration results with it disabled.
Can I buy any replacement filter that fits?
Check the media, airflow resistance, dimensions and seals against the tested specification. Trial-order a replacement and ask for evidence that it preserves the approved whole-unit performance.
