Can missed servicing void my appliance guarantee?

A UK guarantor may refuse additional cover if an applicable, enforceable servicing or repair condition was breached. Ask for the exact clause and reasons. Consumer statutory rights need a separate assessment by the seller; business purchases need a contract review. Discuss factory maintenance records with Cambridge China Bridge.

Ask which guarantee condition was breached

Request the guarantee statement supplied with the appliance and retain the associated advertising. Ask the named guarantor to identify the exact servicing or repair clause, the version it relies on and the cover being refused. Ask the relevant consumer protection authority to confirm how the free consumer guarantee's statement and associated advertising affect your rights. Our free guarantee wording guide covers the required contents.

Check the actual condition: scheduled servicing, specified maintenance tasks, approved repairers, specified parts or permission before repairs. Ask whether refusal concerns the current fault, damage attributed to the work, or all remaining cover. Do not treat a general instruction to maintain the appliance as an answer to which condition was breached.

Build a maintenance record for this appliance

Match invoices and service reports to the appliance model, serial details and installation location. Gather the maintenance instructions, service dates, tasks completed, technician details, parts used and any written approval. Add cleaning logs, photographs and operating records where relevant. A payment record alone may not explain what maintenance was performed.

If servicing was missed, say what was missed and why. Ask the technician to distinguish overdue work from completed work and record the appliance's condition. Request duplicates of lost records rather than reconstructing them as if they were originals. Ask the guarantor which evidence it considers missing before arranging further work.

Record what the independent repairer actually did

Ask the repairer for the reported fault, findings before intervention, work performed, parts fitted and results afterwards. Keep photographs and ask about retaining removed parts safely. Distinguish routine servicing from an attempted repair and from a modification. Ask the guarantor to explain any claimed connection between that work and the present failure.

An independent repairer's involvement alone does not tell you what the guarantee excludes. Ask whether the clause requires an approved repairer or excludes damage caused by repair work, and seek advice if its application is disputed. Before authorising further repairs, use our guide to repairing goods before the seller responds to prepare your questions.

Assess statutory rights separately

For a consumer purchase, address the statutory faulty-goods claim to the contracting seller separately from the guarantee claim to the guarantor. Ask the relevant consumer protection authority to confirm whether a guarantee condition improperly restricts your statutory remedies. Unfair consumer contract terms and unfair consumer notices are not binding on the consumer. Seek advice on disputed wording rather than assuming every servicing condition is unfair.

Ask for an assessment of the underlying fault, including whether it was present at delivery, and a clear explanation of any alleged maintenance or repair damage. A guarantee refusal does not itself settle that assessment or establish entitlement to a remedy. Our fault-at-delivery evidence guide covers the separate proof question.

Send a focused challenge and check business cover

Write: ‘Please identify the guarantee clause and applicable wording supporting your refusal. The attached records show maintenance and repair work. Explain whether you allege a missed condition, damage caused by the work, or both, and provide the supporting findings.’ For a consumer purchase, separately ask the seller to assess statutory remedies and explain its decision in writing.

Equipment bought for your business needs a supply-contract and warranty review rather than an assumption that consumer remedies apply. Use our business supply terms guide. Before ordering, ask Cambridge China Bridge, which has its own staff in China, to obtain the factory's maintenance schedule, repair instructions and proposed service records, then clarify UK claim handling with the seller and guarantor.

Frequently asked questions

Can missed servicing invalidate my appliance guarantee?

It may affect additional cover under an applicable, enforceable condition. Ask for the exact clause, the missed task and the cover refused. Consumer statutory rights need separate assessment.

Does using an independent repairer void my guarantee?

Check the actual wording. Ask whether it requires an approved repairer or excludes damage caused by repairs. Obtain the repair report and challenge an unexplained refusal.

What proof of appliance servicing should I keep?

Keep reports and invoices identifying the appliance, service dates, tasks, technician and parts. Retain maintenance instructions, approvals and relevant photographs. Request copies if records are missing.

Do consumer rights apply to my business appliance?

Business equipment needs a separate review of the supply contract, applicable implied terms and warranty. Do not assume consumer remedies apply merely because the appliance is also sold for home use.
