Does a replacement restart my guarantee?
Do not assume a replacement restarts your guarantee or court claim period. Check the guarantee terms and obtain written confirmation of the replacement's cover dates. Keep the original purchase records because statutory deadlines need separate assessment. Cambridge China Bridge can help organise factory replacement records.

Identify the purchase and the promise
Start with the UK company named as seller on your invoice. Establish whether you bought for your business or as a consumer, and whether the replacement is being supplied under the seller's guarantee, a manufacturer's guarantee or a response to a statutory complaint. Keep your supplier purchase separate from any sale to your customer.
For your business order, review the agreed replacement terms using our guide to warranty administration with a UK sourcing seller. Ask who promises continuing cover and who will handle another fault.
Get the guarantee dates confirmed
For a consumer guarantee, the guarantor's contractual obligation follows the conditions in the guarantee statement and associated advertising. Do not infer a fresh guarantee simply because the replacement is unused or has a different serial number. Ask for the wording that explains cover after replacement.
Request written confirmation of whether the replacement receives the remaining original cover, a fresh period or an agreed extension. Obtain the exact start and expiry dates, the covered product and components, and any treatment of time spent awaiting replacement. For a business purchase, ask the seller to agree these points expressly.
Keep statutory deadlines separate
For England, Wales and Northern Ireland, ask a solicitor to confirm when the applicable contract claim period starts, rather than assuming it runs from guarantee expiry. Do not calculate a fresh court deadline solely from the replacement delivery date. Ask a solicitor to assess the relevant breach, jurisdiction and any separate replacement promise, especially if a deadline may be close.
Ask a solicitor to assess any court claim period separately from the product's expected lifespan and confirm what statutory rights a consumer may retain after guarantee expiry. Our guide to claims after warranty expiry covers that assessment. There is also a distinct consumer rule: the short-term rejection period pauses during the repair or replacement waiting period. Keep this separate from the court deadline.
Ask for a linked replacement record
Ask the seller for a replacement confirmation linking the original invoice and complaint reference to the returned item's serial or batch details and the replacement's identity. Record the original delivery date, fault report date, replacement request or agreement date, collection date and actual replacement receipt date. Keep delivery evidence alongside the seller's confirmation.
Suggested request: “Please confirm which original purchase this replacement resolves, the replacement's identity and delivery date, who provides continuing cover, its start and expiry dates, and the terms supporting those dates. Please also confirm the claims contact, covered faults and responsibility for collection, delivery and installation costs.”

Record what happens if the replacement fails
Ask the UK seller to explain the proposed process for another fault, including inspection arrangements and the evidence it expects. Before signing a closure document, check whether it describes only the physical exchange or also proposes a settlement of the complaint. Ask a solicitor to review unclear settlement wording.
Retain the original invoice, guarantee, advertising promises, correspondence and replacement records together. Use our faulty deliveries and claims guide for the wider supplier dispute. Cambridge China Bridge can use its staff in China to help gather factory dispatch, batch and corrective-action records for the replacement file.
Frequently asked questions
Does a replacement automatically get a new guarantee?
Do not assume so. Check the guarantee terms and ask the provider to confirm whether the replacement has remaining cover, fresh cover or an extension, with exact start and expiry dates.
Does replacement restart the time to sue the seller?
Do not calculate a fresh deadline from replacement delivery alone. Ask a solicitor to assess the applicable jurisdiction, relevant breach and any separate replacement promise.
What replacement paperwork should I ask for?
Obtain a confirmation linking the original invoice, complaint and returned item to the replacement. Include delivery evidence, product identity, cover dates, guarantee terms and the claims contact.
Can I discard the original receipt after replacement?
Keep it with the replacement confirmation. Preserve the original guarantee, correspondence and fault evidence so the purchase and replacement history remain connected.
