Should I repair faulty China goods in the UK myself?
Usually, wait for written agreement before commissioning a UK repair. Preserve the original fault evidence, separate diagnosis from repair, and agree the work, cost payer and reimbursement terms. If urgent action is needed, document why and limit intervention. Discuss the proposed repair with Cambridge China Bridge.

Notify the seller before changing the goods
Send the seller a fault notice identifying the order, affected goods, symptoms and operational impact. Ask whether they want to inspect the goods or nominate an engineer before you arrange local work. Propose a response deadline suited to the urgency. Our warranty administration guide covers the claim contacts and procedures to agree before ordering.
If the goods appear unsafe, stop using them and ask a suitable engineer about making them safe. Explain any urgent action to the seller and record why waiting was impractical. Keep making safe separate from restoring normal operation. Silence, a logged claim or a request for a quotation should not be treated as approval to repair.
Capture the fault before diagnosis alters it
Photograph the goods, identifiers, connections and visible damage before dismantling. Save original videos, error logs, operating settings and correspondence. Record when the fault appeared and what happened immediately beforehand. Avoid resetting software, updating firmware or discarding packaging until you have considered what evidence those actions could remove.
Brief the engineer to distinguish observations from suspected causes and to photograph each intervention. Ask for a report describing the condition before work, tests performed, parts removed and findings. Label and retain failed parts. Give the seller an opportunity to review the findings before repair proceeds. For the wider claim, see goods arriving faulty.
Get separate approval for diagnosis and repair
Request written approval from the seller's named claims approver. Identify the engineer, affected goods, permitted tests and whether opening the product is approved. Make clear whether the approval covers diagnosis only or also replacement parts and repair labour. Ask how the proposed intervention will be treated under the warranty.
Send the repair quotation after diagnosis. Ask the seller to confirm the scope, spending limit, payer and treatment of additional faults. A useful request is: please confirm approval of the attached work and costs, who will pay the engineer, and when any reimbursement will be made. Ask the engineer to stop and seek further approval if the scope changes.
Keep warranty conditions separate from legal rights
Read any warranty condition about approved repairers or prior authorisation. If the seller says local work ends cover, ask them to identify the clause and explain which work or damage they mean. For business purchases under UK supply terms, implied rights exist unless the contract lawfully varies them in a way a court would consider reasonable. Have disputed exclusions reviewed using the UK seller supply terms guide.
Consumer guidance says a seller may still have to repair or replace goods after a warranty expires. Do not assume that guidance determines your business claim. Keep the seller's warranty decision separate from a review of your purchase contract and any applicable statutory rights. Preserving evidence helps that review; it does not establish that the seller must reimburse your chosen repair.

Agree payment and close the repair with evidence
Allocate diagnosis, call-out, labour, parts, transport, removal and refitting separately. State whether VAT is included in the approved amount. Agree who pays if diagnosis finds no covered fault, whether you pay upfront, and whether reimbursement means money or credit against a future order. Request a payment deadline and the documents needed to trigger payment.
After repair, keep the engineer's report, itemised invoice, payment evidence and results of agreed functional checks. Send these to the seller and record any remaining faults or unpaid costs before closing the case. If agreement remains unresolved, consider contractual advice before spending further money. For an alternative involving shipment back to China, use the warranty return guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can I book a UK repair before the seller replies?
Usually wait for written agreement. If urgent action is needed to make the goods safe, document why, preserve evidence and limit the intervention. Do not assume the seller will reimburse it.
Does a local repair void my warranty?
Check the warranty conditions and obtain written approval for the proposed work. Ask the seller to identify any exclusion they rely on. Review contractual and statutory rights separately.
Will the seller pay my UK repair bill?
Agree this before booking work. Confirm the approved scope, spending limit, payer, reimbursement method and payment deadline. Approval to investigate does not establish approval of the repair bill.
What evidence should I keep before repairing faulty goods?
Keep original photographs, videos, logs, settings, order records and correspondence. Ask the engineer to record the condition before intervention and retain labelled failed parts.
