Missed appliance warranty registration: UK rights

A UK seller cannot refuse a consumer's statutory faulty-goods claim solely because warranty registration was missed. Additional guarantee cover depends on its terms; business purchases need a separate contract review. Send purchase evidence and ask the seller to assess the fault. Share the records with Cambridge China Bridge.

Check whether this was a consumer purchase

A consumer is an individual buying wholly or mainly outside their trade, business, craft or profession. An appliance bought for your home and equipment bought for your business therefore need different assessments. Identify the buyer, purchase purpose and contracting seller before choosing your complaint wording.

For a business purchase, review the supply contract alongside the warranty. Ask Trading Standards or a legal adviser to confirm which implied rights apply and whether the contract lawfully varies them, using our UK seller supply terms guide to prepare your questions. Ask the seller to identify any clause it relies on; do not assume missed registration ends every possible claim.

Separate registration conditions from statutory remedies

An additional free consumer guarantee takes effect under its statement and associated advertising. A missed registration deadline may affect that additional cover, depending on the applicable terms. Ask whether registration was required for the advertised cover or only an extension, and request the wording supplied with the appliance. For a transferred appliance, see changing the product registration owner.

A condition cannot remove or restrict a consumer's statutory faulty-goods remedies by making them subject to a restrictive or onerous condition. The appliance's Chinese manufacture does not change that distinction when claiming against your UK seller. For future business orders, use our warranty administration guide to agree the claim procedure before buying.

Build evidence of purchase and the fault

For a consumer claim, a paper receipt is not the only purchase evidence: a bank statement or packaging can also help. Match the payment to the seller, appliance and purchase date using an order confirmation or invoice where available. Our missing receipt guide covers that issue separately.

Attach the model and serial details, delivery record, fault description and relevant photographs or error messages. Keep the guarantee, advertised offer, registration instructions and any attempted-registration confirmation. Record when the fault appeared and how the appliance was used. Avoid dismantling it merely to produce complaint evidence; ask for a safe assessment procedure.

Use complaint wording that identifies your claim

For a consumer purchase, write: ‘I bought this appliance from you for personal use. The attached records identify the purchase and fault. Please assess my statutory faulty-goods claim separately from the guarantee registration condition. I request a repair or replacement where that remedy is available. Please explain your proposed assessment and remedy, or give your reasons for refusing in writing.’

For a business purchase, write: ‘Please assess this fault under our supply contract and applicable implied terms, separately from additional warranty cover. Identify the registration clause you rely on, the cover it affects and your position on the underlying supply claim. The attached order, specification and fault records support this complaint.’

Ask for an assessment, not another registration reply

Consumer remedies depend on the fault and the applicable conditions; missing registration does not itself decide entitlement. Repair or replacement can be unavailable if impossible or disproportionate compared with the alternative. Where the statutory repair or replacement duty applies, the seller must act within a reasonable time, without significant inconvenience, and bear necessary costs.

If the seller repeats ‘not registered’, ask it to answer the underlying fault claim and identify any missing evidence. Keep the refusal and complaint correspondence together. Use our fault-at-delivery evidence guide for the separate question of proving the defect. Seek advice on a disputed claim before paying for an independent assessment or arranging a return.

Frequently asked questions

Can a UK seller reject my claim because I did not register?

Missed registration cannot by itself remove consumer statutory remedies. Ask the seller to assess the faulty-goods claim separately and identify which additional guarantee cover requires registration.

Do consumer rights cover an appliance bought for my business?

Consumer status concerns an individual's purchase wholly or mainly outside their business. For business equipment, review the supply contract, applicable implied terms and warranty separately.

Can I complain about a faulty appliance without a receipt?

Other purchase evidence can help, including a bank statement or packaging. Add an order confirmation or invoice if available so the seller can match the payment to the appliance.

Should I complain to the seller or the manufacturer?

Address a consumer statutory faulty-goods claim to the contracting seller. Address an additional guarantee claim to the named guarantor. Ask each to explain its position separately.
