Faulty returns: no receipt or original packaging?
No. Do not refuse a valid faulty-goods claim solely because the customer lacks a receipt or original packaging. Other evidence can establish the purchase. Check the transaction and fault separately from your voluntary returns policy. Cambridge China Bridge can help organise factory-side evidence.

Separate the consumer claim from your supplier claim
This guide concerns your UK consumer customer's return. Your business purchase from a supplier is a separate matter, covered in goods arrived faulty: supplier claims. Do not use your supplier's paperwork requirements as the checklist for a consumer return.
Check the purchase, not just the receipt
GOV.UK allows proof other than a receipt, including a bank statement or packaging. Missing original packaging is therefore not, by itself, a reason to reject an otherwise valid faulty-goods claim.
Ask for the purchase date, product details and available transaction evidence. Search your order records using an order confirmation, customer account or payment reference. A bank entry may identify your business without identifying the item, so match it against the sale before deciding.
Keep voluntary return conditions separate
For a voluntary change-of-mind policy, state your receipt and packaging conditions clearly. Keep those conditions separate from statutory faulty-goods rights. Online, mail and telephone purchases also have cancellation rights, so do not treat every non-faulty return as voluntary.
Give staff separate response templates for a reported fault, a cancellation and a goodwill request. Avoid a blanket message saying that every return needs its original receipt and box.
Record the fault and arrange suitable packing
Ask what failed, when it happened and how the product was being used. Record photographs, identifying marks and supplied accessories. Missing packaging does not establish whether the product is faulty; investigate that separately using customer return investigations.
Suggest suitable protective packing when the original box is unavailable. Record the return's condition on arrival. Keep purchase verification, fault assessment and transport damage as separate findings so that a missing box does not become an automatic refusal.

Turn the return into usable supplier evidence
Keep the customer record linked to the product, batch and original purchase. Send the factory the fault description and relevant product photographs rather than unrelated customer payment details.
Cambridge China Bridge has staff in China who can help organise factory-side checks. Keep the consumer response and supplier investigation as separate workstreams, with a named person responsible for each.
Frequently asked questions
Can I refuse faulty goods without a receipt?
Not solely because the receipt is missing. Check other purchase evidence and your sales records before assessing the fault.
Is a bank statement proof of purchase?
GOV.UK lists a bank statement as possible evidence. Match the payment to the product and sale; the statement alone may not identify the item.
Does a faulty return need its original box?
Do not make the original box a condition of a valid faulty-goods claim. Ask for suitable protective packing and assess the fault separately.
Can my goodwill policy require a receipt and box?
Set clear conditions for voluntary returns, but keep them separate from faulty-goods rights and applicable distance-sale cancellation rights.
