Branding and packaging in China or the UK?
Apply branding and retail packaging in China when artwork and product variants are settled and the print run matches demand. Finish in the UK when labels, bundles or sales channels may change, provided local handling is workable. Compare the cost per saleable unit with Cambridge China Bridge.

Choose where the final commitment happens
Factory packing suits repeat products with settled artwork and a known sales mix. UK finishing suits uncertain demand or changing retailer requirements. A mixed route can work: apply permanent product branding in China, ship in protective packaging, and add retail sleeves or channel labels in the UK.
Ask for comparable quotations covering packing, freight volume, receiving, storage, local labour, damaged stock and unused printed materials. Divide the total by the units you expect to sell in that presentation. For material and construction specifications, use our packaging sourcing guide.
Separate the product minimum from the print minimum
Ask whether the minimum applies to the product, carton size, artwork, colour or finish. A factory may accept the product order while its printer requires more boxes than you need. Request alternatives such as a shared plain carton with a printed sleeve or label, and ask a UK printer to quote the same specification.
Agree who pays for surplus packaging, where it is stored, how its condition is checked and what happens after an artwork change. Include setup, packing and disposal costs in the comparison. A lower box price can leave you paying for printed stock that never becomes a sale.
Keep artwork changes away from finished stock
Identify what may change: claims, retailer details, language, barcode, bundle contents or seasonal design. Put changeable content on replaceable components where practical. Permanent printing on the product is harder to revise than a sleeve, but replacing a sleeve still needs labour and a check that the contents match.
Set a written print-release point. Name the approved file version, who can authorise changes and how obsolete files and printed materials will be isolated. Ask for the rework proposal before approving a late amendment. Use our factory artwork approval guide for the detailed approval workflow.
Postpone the sales mix, not product identity
UK finishing can keep common stock available for different retail presentations or bundles until orders arrive. It only helps where the underlying goods are interchangeable. Product colour, size, formulation or construction cannot be changed by choosing a different box.
Keep each product variant and batch identifiable through receiving, storage and packing. Give the packer a mapping of contents, packaging version and destination channel. Reserve stock against orders, record completed packs and reconcile unused labels. Do not rely on a similar-looking carton to identify the goods inside.

Approve handling and release separately
For UK finishing, trial the unpacking and repacking process before committing the shipment. Check scratching, contamination, missing accessories, label adhesion, seals and waste removal. Agree who handles shortages and damage. For factory-packed goods, check finished packs before shipment and inspect their condition on arrival.
For consumer products, manufacturers and importers placing goods on the UK market must demonstrate compliance with relevant safety requirements. As a release check, verify the applicable labelling and instructions for the actual product and destination before authorising dispatch. Do not treat artwork approval as compliance approval.
Name the person authorised to release stock. Check contents against the pack specification, scan the finished barcode, reconcile quantities and retain a finished sample with its batch and artwork record. Review packaging added or removed at each location using our packaging producer responsibility guide, rather than assuming UK finishing removes that issue.
Frequently asked questions
Is retail packaging cheaper in China?
Compare the total cost per saleable unit, including surplus print stock, freight volume, UK handling and rework. The factory box price alone cannot settle the decision.
Can I import plain goods and brand them in the UK?
Consider it where the branding method suits the product. Trial adhesion or print durability, allow for handling damage, and verify the applicable product requirements before releasing finished stock.
Can I delay choosing my product variants?
You can delay packaging, channel allocation or bundle choices where common goods support them. Physical differences such as colour and size still need to be decided for production.
What should I check before releasing repacked stock?
Check the product and batch, packaging version, contents, barcode, seals, applicable labels and instructions. Reconcile quantities and obtain release approval from the named person.
