How to assess a log splitter from China
Assess the exact machine, rather than its advertised splitting force. Check protection around the splitting zone, control behaviour, secure log support and hydraulic isolation, then arrange a competent inspection before use. Factory evidence can be coordinated through Cambridge China Bridge.

Define the machine and its intended use
Tell the factory that you want a log splitter for personal firewood preparation. Specify the timber you expect to handle, horizontal or vertical operation, power source, working location and loading method. Ask for the exact model's instructions, declaration, photographs and hydraulic diagram before ordering.
Confirm with the relevant product-safety authority whether machinery rules apply to your personal-use import. Our own-use importing guide explains the distinction between personal use and market supply, while our machinery sourcing guide covers general documentation and supply checks. Here, concentrate on whether the delivered splitter can be operated, cleared and maintained safely.
Inspect protection around the splitting zone
Ask a competent machinery inspector to assess access to the wedge, ram and trapping points throughout the operating cycle. Include access through guard openings and around their ends. A debris cage should not be assumed to prevent hand access. Have any guard interlocks checked against the machine's documented safety design.
Check loading, splitting, return movement and unloading, rather than judging a photograph of an idle machine. Keep bystanders away and do not invite a helper to steady timber beside the ram. Significant safety faults should be corrected before use. If the machine also cuts wood, arrange assessment of the cutting equipment and its interaction with the splitter.
Check how the two-hand controls behave
Include a controlled functional test in the inspector's brief: verify that both controls are needed to initiate splitting and that releasing either stops the hazardous splitting movement. Ask the inspector to assess restart behaviour, return-stroke hazards and whether the controls can readily be operated with an arm or otherwise defeated. Do not improvise bypass tests yourself.
Reject demonstrations using tied levers or a helper holding a control. Request an unedited factory video showing the controls and ram together, but treat it as supporting evidence. The delivered machine still needs checking. Never hold a log with a hand or foot while operating the controls.
Assess log support and hydraulic hazards
Check that the cradle, table and retaining arrangements support the intended logs without someone holding them near the wedge. Ask how split pieces are retained or discharged and how a jammed log is removed. Follow the documented isolation and pressure-release procedure before clearing a jam; switching off alone should not be assumed to remove stored energy.
Inspect hoses, couplings and routing for damage, rubbing and exposure to falling timber. Ask the inspector to review pressure protection and maintenance access. Never feel for a hydraulic leak with your hands or loosen a pressurised fitting. Escaping fluid can penetrate skin. If an injection injury is suspected, seek immediate professional medical treatment and explain the hydraulic-fluid exposure.

Arrange a competent inspection before use
Choose someone experienced in machinery guarding, safety controls and hydraulics, rather than relying solely on a general goods inspection. Provide the factory documents and intended setup. Request a written report covering assembly, stability, log support, guards, controls, power connection, hydraulic condition and safe isolation, with unresolved defects clearly identified.
Use our inspection guide to organise factory evidence, then have the delivered and assembled machine assessed before operating it. Retain the report, corrections and instructions. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can help obtain model-specific evidence and clarify factory changes for the inspector.
Frequently asked questions
Can I import a log splitter just for home use?
Check the exact model, transaction and intended setup, and arrange a competent safety assessment before use.
What should two-hand log splitter controls do?
Ask an inspector to verify that both controls initiate splitting and releasing either stops hazardous splitting movement. Include restart and return behaviour in the assessment.
Can I hold a log while splitting it?
Do not steady it with a hand or foot during operation. Choose support and retaining arrangements suited to your timber; stop if safe positioning requires someone beside the wedge.
Who should inspect an imported log splitter?
Use a competent machinery inspector with relevant guarding, control and hydraulic experience. Ask for a written assessment of the delivered machine and correction of significant safety faults before use.
