Getting started

Can I sell generic on Amazon UK and brand later?

Yes, you can test a genuinely unbranded product, subject to the listing checks for that product. Adding your brand later requires a new ASIN, rather than converting the generic listing. Plan packaging and remaining stock before ordering. Factory samples and packaging checks can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Check whether the trial product is genuinely generic

Amazon describes generic products as unbranded goods without a distinctive name or logo. Inspect the actual sample, retail box and instructions for a factory brand or another company's branding. A plain outer carton does not tell you whether the product inside is unbranded.

Choose the listing route against the goods you will actually receive. Use our Amazon UK sourcing guide for account and listing preparation. This decision should be settled before the factory prints trial-order packaging.

Treat later branding as a separate launch

Amazon's published staff guidance says a generic listing cannot be converted into a branded listing, and rebranding requires a new ASIN. Minor corrections, such as spelling or capitalisation, are a different matter. Adding a brand to an unbranded product is not a spelling correction.

Do not budget on the assumption that reviews or sales history will follow the branded launch. Check the intended brand spelling, identifier route and listing evidence before approving artwork. Use our barcode validation guide, and do not assume an identifier exemption checked for the generic trial will cover the branded version.

Do not join another seller's generic listing

Amazon says attempts to add offers to another seller's generic product, or change its detail page, produce a listing error. A matching factory photograph is therefore no shortcut to using that seller's generic ASIN.

Investigate your own generic listing route before buying stock. Keep the sample photographs, factory model, pack contents and invoice description together. If an error appears, save the message and ask Amazon to clarify the route against those exact goods before changing identifiers or ordering labels.

Make a plan for stock already ordered or stored

List where the generic stock sits: at the factory, in transit, in your warehouse or with Amazon's fulfilment service. Decide whether to sell it through as unbranded stock or investigate physical reworking for the branded launch. Keep the stock versions separate, with a written mapping between packaging, identifiers and listings.

Before assuming stored goods can be relabelled, ask Amazon about removal and resubmission for your case, then ask the warehouse about repacking, inspection and revised labels. A new ASIN does not physically change existing goods. Compare the work and cost before proceeding; our rejected-stock guide covers removal and correction planning.

Approve packaging against your chosen route

For a generic trial, approve an unbranded sample and retail pack while checking the product's applicable warnings, identification and documentation. For a branded trial, settle the name and listing route before printing. Ask the factory to quote plain packaging and branded packaging separately, including artwork, printing setup and any later rework.

If branding later, review the product documentation and responsibility position as well as the artwork. Our branded-goods guide explains why branding can affect compliance responsibilities. Put packaging approval, unused packaging, stock separation and change authorisation into the order. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can check samples and finished packaging against your approved brief.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my Amazon listing from generic to my brand?

Amazon's published guidance says you cannot convert a generic listing into a branded listing. Plan a new ASIN for the branded product.

Can I sell on another seller's generic ASIN?

Amazon says adding an offer to another seller's generic product produces a listing error. Investigate your own listing route before ordering.

Can I put branded stickers on stock already at Amazon?

Do not assume this can be done in storage. Check removal and resubmission with Amazon, then confirm physical reworking, labels and inspection with your warehouse.

Should my China trial order use plain packaging?

Use plain packaging if you intend a genuinely unbranded trial and accept a separate branded launch later. If the brand is settled, compare launching with branded packaging from the outset.
