Private Label Supplements from China: UK Rules

CCB can coordinate Chinese supplement suppliers and ingredient documents, but a UK food regulatory specialist must review the formula, dose, claims and market route before commitment. Food supplements are foods. A supplier’s export history does not establish that your product can be sold in the UK.

What to send us for a quote

Send the full formula with ingredient forms and daily doses, target users, capsule or powder format, proposed claims, allergens, packaging, quantities, destination and intended UK market. Request ingredient origin, specifications, batch certificates of analysis, methods and traceability records. Identify animal-derived materials early.

Which UK food supplement rules apply?

The Food Supplements (England) Regulations 2003 and corresponding devolved rules govern supplements, alongside food safety and food information law, including Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 as applicable. Labels need the food supplement designation, characterising nutrients or substances, recommended daily portion, amounts per daily portion, the warning not to exceed it, and statements about a varied diet and keeping out of children’s reach. General food particulars, allergen information and the responsible food business address also apply. Novel foods require the relevant authorisation before marketing; an application alone is not approval. Ask a UK specialist to check ingredient forms, authorisation conditions, health claims, medicine classification and GB versus Northern Ireland requirements.

What drives the cost?

Ingredient identity and purity, dosage form, blend uniformity, independent testing, packaging and shelf-life work drive cost. Chinese suppliers offer ingredients such as vitamin C, amino acids and botanical extracts; each exact ingredient and manufacturing process needs separate qualification. Availability is not evidence of permitted UK use.

How is quality controlled?

Approve the development batch and agree identity, potency, microbiological, contaminant and stability tests with a suitable laboratory and UK adviser. Review in-process batch records and traceability. Use ISO 2859-1 pre-shipment sampling for packing and visual checks; AQL does not demonstrate ingredient safety or potency.

What affects lead time?

Ingredient qualification, novel-food review, laboratory work, label approval, raw material availability and import controls affect timing. Get specialist advice on novel ingredients, high doses, medicinal claims and animal-origin products before ordering or setting a launch date.

What should UK importers check?

Confirm the commodity code, customs value, origin, importer of record and EORI with your broker. Duty depends on classification and applicable trade measures. Check product-specific UKCA or CE requirements where relevant; a component or factory certificate does not establish conformity of the finished product. Great Britain and Northern Ireland can follow different routes.

Standards and regulatory sources

Check the applicable market and agreed edition; naming a standard is not a certificate of compliance.

What you get

  • A UK sourcing company with its own team in China, coordinating your brief and supplier questions.
  • A written specification, acceptance criteria and delivery responsibilities agreed before commitment.
  • Evidence and open questions recorded for your approval.

What we do

  1. Review your files and intended use; clarify specification, inspection scope and delivery.
  2. Compare supplier proposals or agree the check scope, including exclusions and required evidence.
  3. Coordinate samples or on-site work, record findings and obtain your approval before the next commitment.
  4. Arrange the agreed production follow-up, inspection, report and delivery paperwork.

Cambridge China Bridge in brief

  • Buying from Chinese factories since 2021 (the company was incorporated in September 2022), for our own businesses and for clients on the same terms.
  • Our own staff are based in China, at two bases: the Pearl River Delta (Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan) and the Yangtze River Delta (Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu). They visit factories themselves.
  • Quotes to suit how you buy: one delivered price, or an itemised quote with the factory cost, freight, duty and our service fee shown separately. Open-book detail is available on request.
  • Audits and inspections are usually included in the quote for an order placed with us; complex checks that need a third party are charged extra, agreed first.
  • Orders run from a first trial to scheduled full containers; the factory’s own minimum is stated in the quote.
  • In one project, a UK EV charging operator cut unit cost by 70% and scaled 3× faster. In another, a multi-site Cambridge café chain saved 50% on packaging.
  • A UK company in Cambridge and London: Cambridge China Bridge is the trading name of Piggy Pineapple Ltd, company number 14385590.
  • Send 1–3 products you buy now and what you pay. We compare the same specification, quantity, inspection and delivery scope to establish a cost benchmark.
  • A reference call with a past client can be arranged, with that client’s agreement.

How we charge

Quotes to suit how you buy: one delivered price, or an itemised quote with the factory cost, freight, duty and our service fee shown separately. Open-book detail is available on request.

Our margin is included in the quoted price or shown separately as a service fee. The service fee depends on the agreed scope, including products, samples, inspections and ongoing supply.

Questions buyers ask

Does a certificate of analysis make a supplement legal in the UK?

No. A batch certificate supports specified test results, not overall legality. A UK specialist must assess permitted ingredient forms, novel-food status, dose, claims, labelling and the applicable import route.
