Pricing three outdoor sauna tent and wood stove sets for a buyer in the Channel Islands

A buyer in the Channel Islands wanted portable wood-fired sauna tents to resell; we priced three tent-and-stove sets, set out what each minimum order meant, and kept the sauna stones out of the shipment.

Enquiry:

What the buyer asked

The buyer wanted portable wood-fired sauna tents with stoves to resell, starting with about 10 sets.

They needed prices, specifications and a realistic view of freight and delivery.

What we checked

  • The supplier's quotation line by line, including a revision two days later that replaced one of the stoves.
  • Tent fabrics, frames, sizes and net weights; stove material, thickness and dimensions.
  • Which components the supplier listed as CE. All three stoves were; for two of the three tents the certificate field read N/A.
  • Carton sizes, and how many sets fit in a 20ft container.
  • Whether sauna stones could travel in the same sea shipment.

What we found

  • Three sets: Standard, a 210 × 210 × 180 cm tent with a full-size 304 stainless steel stove; Value, a taller 210 × 210 × 210 cm tent described as flame-retardant, with a compact stove; and Premium, a 220 × 220 × 180 cm tent with a larger stove. Our EXW quotes were US$565, US$365 and US$795 a set.
  • The minimum orders were 100 sets for Standard and Premium and 300 sets for Value, far above the 10 sets the buyer had in mind. The size of the commitment, not the unit price, was the main hurdle.
  • From confirmed carton sizes, about 140–155 Standard sets fit in a 20ft container. The stove carton sizes for the other two sets were still missing, so we did not give a container count for them.
  • The supplier's lead time was 65 days after sample approval, with full payment before shipment.
  • Sauna stones could not go by sea from China to the UK on the proposed route, so we recommended buying them locally. The stone basket on each stove is included.
  • Tents and stoves are made separately, so other pairings are possible, but only after the factory confirms chimney fit, heat clearances and stove output in writing.

Status

Quotation issued; awaiting the buyer's decision.

What this means for other buyers

  • Work out what a minimum order means in money as well as units. A lower unit price at 300 sets can be a bigger commitment than a higher one at 100.
  • Check which component a CE label covers. A certificate for the stove says nothing about the tent.
  • Ask early whether every item can travel in the shipment. Here the sauna stones could not, and were better bought locally.
