Sourcing wooden barrel saunas from China

A wooden outdoor sauna is usually classed as a prefabricated building of wood at 2% UK duty, and its wood-burning or electric heater at 2%, with no anti-dumping duty on China. Sauna stoves are outside the UK ecodesign rules, but an electric heater is still electrical equipment and the timber must be legally harvested. Duty is low, freight is not

A barrel sauna or sauna cabin made of wood is, for tariff purposes, usually a prefabricated building of wood. Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 25 September 2026, that code carries 2% duty on goods from China, and so do the stove and an electric sauna heater, with no anti-dumping measure on any of them. A kit sent as loose boards rather than a building may be classed differently, so confirm the commodity code for what is actually in the crate.

Duty is rarely what decides the landed price of a sauna. Volume is. An assembled barrel sauna ships a great deal of air, and even flat-packed it is a large, heavy consignment for its value, so the freight quote matters as much as the factory price. The heater: what the rules cover and what they leave out

The UK ecodesign regulations for heaters, retained from EU law, explicitly exclude sauna stoves: Article 1 of the solid fuel regulation and Article 1 of the regulation for other local space heaters both list sauna stoves among the products they do not apply to. That removes an efficiency and emissions test a wood-burning room heater would face, but it does not remove the duty to supply a safe product, and installing a solid fuel appliance is a building control matter where the sauna is put up. Check with the local authority before the flue is fitted.

An electric sauna heater is electrical equipment under the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, which apply to equipment designed for 50 to 1,000 volts alternating current. The product standard is IEC 60335-2-53, which covers sauna heating appliances and infrared cabins with a rated power input of up to 20 kilowatts, rated at no more than 250 volts single-phase or 480 volts otherwise. Ask for a test report to that standard naming the exact heater model, not a certificate for the range.

The timber, and what to check in the build

Timber placed on the UK market must not be illegally harvested, and the business placing it on the market has to exercise due diligence to show it is not. The retained EU Timber Regulation lists prefabricated buildings among the timber products it covers. Ask the factory for the species, the country of harvest and the supply chain documents before you order, because they are needed to do that due diligence and they are hard to reconstruct afterwards.

On the build itself, the points that separate a sauna that lasts from one that does not are the fit of the staves or wall boards, the steel bands on a barrel and how they are tensioned, the roof covering, the door glass, and the clearance and heat shielding around the stove and its flue. Put each of those in the specification, photograph the approved sample, and have a pre-shipment inspection check the goods against it before they are crated.

One sauna or a container, to the UK or further afield

Because a sauna is bulky and often a one-off purchase, the sensible first order is a single unit, sampled and inspected, and consolidated with other goods if you have them. Cambridge China Bridge adds no minimum of its own, so a one-sauna order is quoted the same way as a container.
