Why are small LCL shipments so expensive?
A tiny LCL shipment can attract a minimum billable volume plus handling and clearance fees that do not shrink with the cargo. Ask for the calculation and charging basis of every line, then compare the complete delivered total with courier delivery. Packing details can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Why a smaller shipment may not mean a smaller bill
LCL means sharing container space. Your cargo still needs receiving, consolidation, separation at destination and release paperwork. Charges for that work may have a minimum or apply per shipment, even when the goods occupy very little space. A low sea freight rate therefore tells you little about the delivered total.
The LCL or FCL guide covers the wider transport choice. For a tiny order, focus first on which charges change with cargo size and which remain payable regardless. Ask whether reducing the carton size would actually reduce the invoice.
Get the minimum billable volume in writing
Send external packed dimensions and gross weights, including any pallet or crate. Ask the forwarder to show actual volume, the weight-versus-volume calculation, rounding and the minimum billable quantity. Have it identify which cargo measurements it uses and whether non-stackable packing changes the chargeable space.
Distinguish a minimum billable volume from a minimum monetary charge. A volume floor changes the quantity multiplied by the rate; a monetary minimum sets the lowest payable amount for that line. Ask which applies to freight and each handling item separately, whether minima are combined or separate, and how depot remeasurement changes the bill.
Classify each handling and clearance line
Request an itemised origin and destination schedule, including collection, warehouse handling, unpacking, documents, release, clearance and final delivery. For every line, record its basis, minimum, quoted amount and invoice issuer. Use the forwarder quote checklist for the wider booking terms.
A clearance service fee is separate from duty and import VAT. Ask what declaration work it includes and what triggers extra charges, such as additional goods lines or amendments. HMRC requires written confirmation of customs representation terms and retention of the agreement. Keep that agreement alongside the commercial fee schedule.
| Charge type | What to obtain | Effect on a tiny shipment |
|---|---|---|
| Volume or weight rate | Calculation, units, rounding and billable minimum | The billed quantity may exceed the actual cargo quantity |
| Minimum monetary charge | Minimum amount and the line it applies to | Reducing cargo size may leave the payable amount unchanged |
| Fixed handling or clearance fee | Amount and basis: shipment, document or declaration | The fee may remain unchanged when cargo size falls |
| Conditional charge | Trigger, tariff, notification and approval arrangements | Keep it visible outside the confirmed total |
Compare with a courier parcel on the same basis
Quote the same goods, collection address, delivery postcode and receiving arrangements. Allow for different packing: a courier carton and a sea freight pallet may have different external dimensions. Ask the courier for actual and volumetric weight, its conversion factor, rounding and minimum, plus fuel, remote-area, oversize and clearance charges where applicable.
Compare goods, packing, collection, origin handling, transport, destination handling, clearance service, delivery and insurance, with duty and VAT shown separately. Check any fee for advancing tax. Do not count a bundled item again. Use the same VAT treatment across the comparison; the landed-price guide explains the wider cost layers.

Test the saving before changing the order
Ask for revised delivered totals for the current packing and any proposed smaller packing or consolidated order. If freight remains below its minimum and handling fees stay fixed, tighter packing may save nothing. Adding goods may spread fixed fees across the order but still increase your total spend and leave you with unwanted stock. For ceramic shipments, see packing ceramic tableware for sea freight.
Before booking, resolve unpriced destination items, identify who can invoice you and agree storage, waiting and failed-delivery triggers. For an unexpected courier invoice, use the courier fee dispute guide. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can obtain factory packing details so the comparison starts with confirmed measurements.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a standard minimum volume for LCL?
Ask for the minimum in your route-specific quotation. Confirm it separately for freight and handling, including units, rounding and whether a monetary minimum also applies.
Why am I billed for more volume than I shipped?
A minimum billable quantity, rounding, pallet dimensions or non-stackable space may explain it. Request the measurement record and calculation for each affected charge.
Is courier cheaper than LCL for a tiny order?
It can be when LCL minima and fixed fees outweigh the freight saving. Compare complete delivered quotations using confirmed packing and the same delivery and VAT assumptions.
Does an LCL clearance fee include import tax?
Ask for separate lines for clearance work, duty, import VAT and any tax advancement fee. Confirm what the service fee covers and which changes trigger extra charges.
